Every single Chevrolet Corvette sold in the world since 1981 has been built at Chevrolet’s Bowling Green, Kentucky plant and the national Corvette Museum is also based in the Bluegrass State so yesterday’s announcement making the Corvette the Official State Sports Car of Kentucky is a no-brainer. I am kind of surprised to learn that the Corvette hadn’t already received some special recognition from its home state, especially since the current plant is responsible for more model years than either of the other two Corvette plants. The St Louis plant was responsible for 27 model years of the legendary Detroit sports car, building all of the Vettes from 1954 through 1981 and the original 1953 Corvettes were built in a tiny Flint plant.
Governor Steve Beshear held a ceremonial signing of House Bill 104 at the Bowling Green plant and the bill, which was original signed on April 29 of this year, read as follows (per yesterday’s press release from GM).
AN ACT designating the Corvette as the official state sports car of Kentucky.
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky:
SECTION 1. A NEW SECTION OF KRS CHAPTER 2 IS CREATED TO READ AS FOLLOWS:
The Corvette is named and designated the official state sports car of Kentucky.
Democratic representative Jody Richards, the primary sponsor of HB 104 had this to say after the ceremony:
This signing is particular important because the event is being held at the Corvette Plant – the only place in the world where Corvettes are built. I think it is important that the community comes together to celebrate the now Official Sports Car of Kentucky and America’s favorite sports car.
Congratulations to Chevrolet for their legendary Corvette being named the Official State Sports Car of Kentucky – one more notch in the belt of the longest running performance car in American history.
