An Amber Alert has been cancelled after an 11 year old girl, Alexis Cartwright was discovered in

a pharmacy with her father, Lemuel Cartwright late Wednesday afternoon, January 6, 2010. Lemuel Cartwright is accused of abducting Alexis and removing her from a hospital where she was staying on Sunday, January 3, 2010. Alexis is a ward of the state of North Carolina and Lemuel Cartwright did not have legal authorization to remove her from the Cumberland Children’s Hospital in New Kent, Virginia. An Amber Alert had been issued in both North Carolina and Virginia for the girl.
The pair were in a CVS located at 471 Boyce Street in Manning, South Carolina when they were recognized by a shopper. The person, who remains identified, contacted authorities and stated that she saw the pair in the store.
The Manning Police Chief Blair Shaffer said that the citizen who made the phone call recognized Lemuel Cartwright’s photo from a web site. As officers headed to CVS, the FBI were ready for action as they were aware that Lemuel Cartwright had used his debit card at the pharmacy. Officer Shaffer said that the arrest was quick and without incident.
Alexis Cartwright will return to the care of the state of North Carolina, Lemuel Cartwright was transported to Charleston where he will face kidnapping and child neglect charges.
