A clinical trial is a study in which people receive treatment. In a controlled trial at least two groups are compared. The treated group receives treatment and the control group receives no treatment. In a placebo-controlled trial, the control group receives a placebo, or inactive drug.

A randomized trial is a trial in which the subjects are randomly assigned to either the treatment or control group. A crossover trial is one in which the subject receives both the treatment and the placebo during the trial.

The best type of clinical trial is a double-blind study, in which neither the researchers or the patients know what they are receiving.

These Denver-metro clinical trials are currently seeking participants:

Acurian in Boulder is working with a pharmaceutical company to find individuals who are currently taking Namenda, Aricept, Exelon or Razadyne for memory loss or who have mild-to-moderate Alzheimer's disease. If you or your loved one qualifies to participate in the clinical research study, the following benefits are available:

Dr. Leslie Moldaur at 12015 E. 46th Ave., Ste. 500, Denver, is conducting a clinical research study to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of an investigational drug for men and women over 50 years old with mild to moderate Alzheimer's. The participants must live at home or in a community in which a caregiver can accompany him or her on all study clinic visits and visit him or her daily. Available benefits include:

As of 2008, more than 500 clinical trials have been conducted for possible treatment for the prevention of Alzheimer's disease. At this time, results are inconclusive.
