Thanks to a US Department of Energy grant of $490,000, downtown Columbus will soon be getting a boost for its bike commuting population, in the form of bike shelters, lockers, and parking.
With the number of bike commuters at least doubling in the past year (going from 0.4 percent to 0.8 percent of all commuter trips downtown, according to Consider Biking), such facilities are sorely needed for the cycling population.
Cleve Ricksecker, executive director of Capital Crossroads, explains further. "The increase in bike commuters demands better facilities downtown, and better facilities will undoubtedly increase the number of bikers. This is a needed and welcomed addition to our downtown fabric as we continue to maintain our role as one of the most sustainable districts in the region."
The locations and exact numbers of facilities are yet to be determined, but it's clear that this is going to be a welcome addition to the Columbus downtown and will help to reduce congestion and pollution downtown as more cyclists take to the road and enjoy the facilities.
