“Poi" is the Maori word for "ball" on a cord. This ancient Maori form of juggling, where balls are swung around the body, now has an almost cult-like following in the rave, trance and nightclub scenes around the world. Think juggling meets dancing.
Poi performers often have elaborately decorated poi made of a glow-like substance, flags or ribbons, or even fire. Poi dancers basically juggle to the music. Poi beginners usually start off learning how to juggle (or “spin”) with sock or bean-bag poi. They practice simple moves until they graduate to more challenging, artistic poi moves. There are dozens of poi juggling moves and tricks known as reels, weaves, fountains, crossers, windmills, butterflies, stalls, and wraps.
