In Western cultures, we tend to use dance as a form of entertainment, to socialize, as exercise, or to attract a mate. However, in most of the world, dance has historically been a means of prayer, a form of worship, or an act in a rite of passage. Ecstatic Dance is where meditation meets dance. Note: There is no religion behind it—just music!
The ultimate goal of ecstatic dance is to achieve better levels of health, wholeness, and spiritual connection (whatever that may mean for you) through unrestricted movement (dance), in a safe, non self-conscious environment. The beauty of ecstatic dance is there is no wrong way (or right way) to dance. At ecstatic dance events, all ages, races, sexes, ideologies, etc. are present.
Every Sunday morning and Wednesday evenings, Ecstatic Dance East Bay has set up a dance sanctuary, with acro-yoga sessions and talented DJ’s, at Oakland’s Historic Sweet’s Ballroom. On Sundays, after an ecstatic dance session, it is not uncommon that everyone goes over to Whole Foods across the street and has a group picnic.
A few FAQ’s about Ecstatic Dance
1. What should I bring?
The most important things to bring are an open mind and a desire to move your body! Aside from that, I recommend:
· A big bottle of drinking water.
· A hand towel (because you will sweat!)
2. What should I wear?
Wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows for maximum freedom of movement. Most people dance barefoot, but wear whatever shoes and clothes are most comfortable for you.
3. What dance experience is required?
Absolutely none! It's all about moving your body in whatever way is right for you. Many first time dancers report finding a new sense of freedom of movement in this safe and accepting dance environment.
4. Do I have to dance with other people?
No, you don't. Some people do dance together at times, but there is no expectation.
You must try this at least once!!! This has become an addiction for me!
