Natural treatment of constipation is the way to go

In the last article the topic was natural remedies for diarrhea; in this one, the opposite side, constipation, will be examined. It's not uncommon to swing back and forth from one condition to the other. In fact, treating either with some over the counter drugs can cause this. A quick fix for the runs may result in being virtually plugged for a few days; similarly, taking something fast-acting for constipation can feel like the effect of a small dynamite blast. Instead of driving yourself and your gastrointestinal tract crazy, why not find a remedy based in natural substances, friendly to the body?

First, it's necessary to determine if your constipation is merely the result of poor nutritional choices, which usually means the condition is temporary, or a symptom of something more serious. Chronic constipation can signal trouble in the intestines as well as elswhere in the digestive system. An examination may be a wise move to determine the problem's source. However, to get things going in the meantime is not only a matter of relief, it can tell you whether more attention is required.

pruneMost people are aware that fiber is of the highest priority in good bowel health. Soluble fiber such as bran and whole grains, orwhole grains non-soluble fiber such as green leafy vegetables, along with plenty of water, help the digestive tract move materials bound for elimination along. If you seek more help, however, be warned that even some natural laxatives can have harsh effects causing painful cramping and nausea, such as cascara or castor oil. Less stressful remedies include the old faithful prunes or their juice, or for those who can't stand their taste, try apples or apple juice. The pectin found in apples contains malic acid, a reliable bowel stimulant. Flaxseed (most easily ingested in cereal or multigrain bread; any other method is too unappetizing and defeats the purpose) is another fiber source with laxative properties.

If these suggestions don't help, there is a sure-fire method in the arsenal that rarely fails: hot peppers and spices. Whether taken as-is, or in hot sauce form, they are highly successful as a last resort. Unfortunately the aftermath is generally not too pleasant and may cause repercussions for a little while, but if you're desperate (and brave) enough, go for it. When you recover, you will vow to eat a healthy, high-fiber diet for the rest of your life and never need the hot stuff again. Some lessons are learned best the hard way.
