First it was a $10 surcharge for travel on November 29, January 2 and 3 added by American Airlines. Following close behind were Delta Air Lines, US Airways and United Airlines. By surcharging these dates they were signaling that these dates had become popular with those planning a trip during the holidays, and if you were one of these people you were going to pay more.
Now travel search engine FareCompare reports that has discovered 10 more days that have been hit with peak-travel surcharges, so space is definitely tightening up. The new dates are November 30; December 26 and 27; March 14, 20, 21 and 28; April 11 and May 28. So, while Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years were the surcharged dates originally, higher fares are popping up for Spring Break, Easter and even Memorial Day.
Considering that Minneapolis/St. Paul is one of the strongest winter travel origination points (I wonder why), space from the Twin Cities to warmer climes will be at an even higher premium. Remember, there are fewer flights, and smaller planes with fewer seats flying many routes these days. If you are contemplating a trip during a peak travel period, sit down as soon as possible and get it done.
