Avatar and another liberal Hollywood political message

Avatar spreads liberal message
Avatar spreads liberal message

First off, don’t see the movie Avatar. It might look good, but the direction and storytelling are horrible. Unfortunately, director James Cameron and his lefty loonies are trying to promote another political message to the unsuspecting public: America is a repressive nation.

In Avatar, the evil white man tries to conquer the Na'vi tribe, aliens who have very similar characteristics of African Americans and American Indians. But in a predictable politically correct fashion, evil whites, played by Sam Worthington and Sigourney Weave, realize how evil the white man really is and side with the Na'vi people. Sam Worthington even becomes one of them! Wow….it’s just so deep. But liberals don’t need something deep; anything that shows America or white people in a bad light is good enough for them.

Here is a good idea for James Cameron’s next film. How ‘bout we call it Destructiveness Neviteuss. It will be about a perfect country that values family, education, and morals. Suddenly, a tribe called the Liberatess invades and allows uncontrolled illegal immigration, encouragement of immoral sexual practices, and the dumbing down of our educational system to make sure that all are equal. Somehow, it’s doubtful that Hollyweird will make a movie that promotes something truthful.

Are you joking? A white man is acknowledging that the white man has ruined the earth, destroyed and tricked Native Americans and pursued an immoral war in Iraq and you think its a bad thing?

Hey Lisa, thanks for ruining the end of the movie. Guess it's true that conservatives have to throw a fit and ruin it all for everyone else. Why don't you and everyone just shut it and watch the movie and enjoy it for the technological splendor that it is? God, stop tripping over yourself because "OMG they's the blacks!" is such a dumb reason. THEY'RE NOT AS ADVANCED AS US? Or did Jesus not mention that in the bible? DIAF

Pity that right wing wackjobs can't see a movie as, well just a movie. If you think the message portrayed couldn't happen by the year 2154 I have news for you. Humanity has a tendency to repeat actions time and again throughout history. And if you think we wouldn't strip mine a planet in a hearbeat for an ore that could power our civilizations insatiable need for more....well once again I would point you at a history book. Humanity has this beautiful ability to rationalize everything we do. Be it the atrocities by Japan in WW2 to gitmo to internment camps for Japanese during WW2.

You need to go back to school and learn some history. Do you really think Avatar has a bad message? Why, because an American decided to think for himself and make a good decision. You think war is the answer to all our problems. You are not very smart, are you??? Have a good holiday Honey, and write another column because this one is gonna get you a lot of discussed readers. You probably shouldn't even be a writer, with such a shallow mentality. I guess you could have made a better movie too?

Trust me Congress and the great wonder of all "Obama", are doing that job just fine. Liberals are so brain washed into being the way they are they don't even realize when it is happening. You fell for global warming, you fell for universal health care, and now you actually think that Holywood doesn't put there left agenda in almost everything that comes out of there? That just shows how stupid and simple minded you really are. It's funny how Radical left always try to portray the right conservative as white dumb rednecks, and yet they are the ones that can't even look at a film and see the truth. Now that is true stupid!! and truly dumb...

You people calling her names really make yourself look stupid. I'm not in agreement with most of the article but to resort to name calling?

I happen to think the film has a good message, but also an overly simplistic one. All indiginous are portrayed as good, when in fact we know that wasn't realistic. Many of them enslaved each other, and some, like the Chicasaw and the Choctaw, purchased and enslaved African-Americans. Not all of the tribes were environmentally conscious either. The movie also makes all women appear good while men are either good or bad, another common misandrist (anti-male) theme of Hollywood. But aside from the Hollywood-style oversimplification, I still think the film has a good message. I also appreciate Lisa for her opinion and her willingness to express it and risk the childish reactionary name-calling that we see here.

Great Article. I won't be seeing it as they portray the US Marines as the bad guys. When people are suppose to cheer when US Marines die, something is wrong. This is the movie Pocahontas with special effects. Evil Europeans conquering a peaceful tribe, one man falls in love with a girl from the other tribe, they fight back against the Evil Europeans because they represent all that is good in the world. Now replace Europeans with Americans and that is Avatar. Recycled idea, is anything new in Hollywood anymore?

I love the visuals of the movie, but the anti-corporate/anti-establishment message was very elementary and quite honestly, the whole thing has been done over and over again.

The characters were quite linear as well. Tribesmen who happen to have no interest with their galactic neighbors or their technology are the good guys oppressed by technologically advanced human beings who travel light-years just to make war with them. Instead, we battle them in the stupidest way possible - by sending foot soldiers on a very hostile environment, where everything kills. Why not bomb the area first and then move in after? I mean thats what the Americans do.

As a pacific Islander on a once Spanish colony. I was shaking my head for two things in Avatar, one was the awesome graphics and the other was the very simplistic storyline, and characters. People in the states might find it hip to hate themselves burdened by unnecessary guilt from their past. But would you prefer to give up 1000 years progr

You are a horrible person for dissing President Obama. He has only had a year in office to make changes. You republicans only want to see him crash and burn because grandpa McCain couldn't make it to the white house. Go support that dumbass Palin some more why don't you?

As long as there is divide between the 2 parties, nothing will ever get done, because that's how the government was set up. O my goodness you have no idea how much i agree with you! But you forgot that the true bad guy in the movie was capitalism! The evil white man was driven by the evils of capitalism with the attempt at harvesting that special metal that was worth millions from Pandora that would have destroyed there planet. Also that alien race treated there planet like a god, just like the progressive movement says we should do today. They were literary connected to there planet and they "shared its energy". They had no god, Pandora was there god. There society was a perfect socialist utopia! Maybe there species could handle socialism but humans have proven time and time again that they can not.
This movie is just another attempt do denounce our traditional values and move us further away from capitalism and further away from god

I saw the movie and I was very impressed with both how well advertised it was along with the awesome 3D special effects. Other than that, I was very disappointed in all the political messages it sent. I spent my time and money to relax and be entertained, not to be filled with "political propaganda" as many have called it. Here are a couple of reasons as to why I did not enjoy the movie as much as I had hoped
    1. As a proud supporter of the US armed forces and everything they are doing to protect and defend our country, I was embarrassed as to how military was awfully portrayed in this movie. They aren't ruthless murderers, they are brave men and women who are willing to give their life for a proper cause.
    2. Jake Sully, the marine, betrays the human race along with his marine values of loyalty and commentment. That is a terrible message to send to anyone, let alone someone who wishes to serve in th military.
    3. And lastly, why are the humans the bad guys? Can we not be proud of us?

After consideration of the basic story, however, I do take issue with his description of the film as "leftist propaganda" I believe that it is more consistent with a libertarian perspective than it is liberal perspective.

Without delving into the film too deeply, at first glance to me it is a story about the Navi... an indigenous people who live on the planet Pandora. A technologically superior civilization from earth (I don't believe that it is mentioned in the film from which country they come), is on the planet extracting minerals. Their hunger for these minerals drive them to wanton destruction of the habitat of the Navi, and the Navi themselves.

I see two major themes here. 1) habitat destruction and 2) personal liberty.

With regard to habitat destruction, there is little doubt in my mind that as the superior being on this planet we have a responsibility for the stewardship of the earth itself and the crea

Is it a matter of bashing "White America" for no reason or is it there some actual truth to it? It's inspired off of what has happened and some people need to come to grip with reality. White Male Powered America has in the past and in ways, still oppressed minorities and women. Look at how "diverse" our government officials and CEOs are. Face the truth, Conservative America, racism of any form is unintelligent and barbaric. Also, I support our troops but citizen abuse has happened in the Middle East. You consider it to be unpatriotic to express when the country/military is going wrong. However, our free speech has been set up so we may HAVE OPINIONS!

Drink your fill, Kool-Aid people, your Guyana will arrive soon enough. You are being prepared for the slaughter, and you don't even know it. But history is full of this, and as Santayana said: "Those that fail to learn from history, are doomed to repeat it". George Orwell crowed of the "great acheivements of Communism" BEFORE he visited Russia. He wrote "Animal Farm" and "1984" when he returned a very changed man. Yes, there were definitely political messages and they were definitely good ones. I agree with those who disagree with the author. I find it frightening that you would be offended at that fact that they spoke out against declaring war on innocent people/aliens who had nothing but a valuable natural resource. This is an interesting take considering the Bush years and the Iraqi war. Who cares who the "evil" side looked like. There are evil men everywhere no matter what their race or nationality. Like someone else said, it's a movie anyway! And guess what, it actually is a GOOD thing to take care of our planet (which seems to be another message in the movie). I'm independent and I found the movie to be fantastic all around. It teaches good lessons: don't take advantage of people, using force to get what you want doesn't work, take care of your planet. But I guess you're too close-minded to see all that.

If all one sees in Avatar is political propaganda, then that's simply his own selective viewing at work. I'm not suggesting there weren't any political undertones in Avatar, but it's a shame that while watching it from such a narrow point of view you overlook its depiction of the beauty of tribal cultures and their connection to the world, as well as the film's powerful spiritual undertones. What you have done in essence is allow your own habitual thinking to rob you of the complete experience and overall message.

I did not see it as being liberal propaganda. Yes, it was a very apt metaphor for the Native American experience, but can anyone really disagree with the fact that the Native Americans were treated terribly and nearly driven to extinction?

I did not think it was anti-capitalist. Sure, there was a corporation behind it, but ultimately the corporation teamed up with the MILITARY to achieve its means. It's about government corruption and the danger of business-government partnerships. The idea that government and business should not be in cahoots together is not a liberal idea. Plenty of conservatives and libertarians ascribe to this as well.

That also shows how brainwashed the soldiers are when he says like "we will fight terror w terror!" if there is a message to American govt, then it is also about what America has been doing in the mid.east, being the real terrorist, America calls the natives of the land terrorists and poor soldiers believe this crap jus because Arabs are poor n their culture is kinda messed up n shet..
