Don't you want to know what happened to the women from Waiting to Exhale? On the shelves of bookstores now you'll find Getting to Happy, Terry McMillan's sequel to Exhale, her 1992 blockbuster.

The African-American Books Examiner informed readers in the spring of McMillan's new novel. In this sequel, the author takes her most popular characters into midlife.

Her publisher, Viking Adult, released Getting to Happy in haradback on September 7 (375 pp., $27.95). A review at the Washington Post says:

The difference between this book and "Waiting to Exhale" is that "happy" has a different meaning now. For these women, it's no longer about the perfect job or the perfect man. It's a more complicated notion. The theme of addiction carries through the novel, and that's no accident. McMillan suggests that Bernadine's struggle with antidepressants, Robin's trips to the mall and Gloria's struggle with food are all symptoms of the same thing.

The reviewer credits McMillan as being uncompromising and respecting her readers.

Promoting the book, McMillan is currently granting interviews, such as the one she gave recently to The Root where she discusses "her new novel, Michelle Obama, Twitter, getting along with her ex and why we need a national coming-out day." As discussed in the African-American Books Examiner's earlier piece on McMillan, the writer's life exploded publically in 2005 when her now ex-husband revealed he was gay.

You can purchase the book on Amazon.com for less. I have seen three stars from the folks who have time to read this book. I am going to read it. I have it on reserve at the library. I am number 56 on the list. Right now, I am too busy with homework to read anything except a textbook. I ordered an audio version of the book. I'm really interested in seeing what direction she takes the ladies in.
