Former Laker Kareem Abdul-Jabber has made public his battle with leukemia, a disease he was diagnosed with last December. The NBA all time leading scorer is a basketball favorite and a prominent figure in sports. Abdul-Jabbar retired from Basketball in 1989 but stayed close to the Lakers as special assistant coach. At 62, he has had a successful and inspirational career and decided to come forward with his disease to inspire those with cancer, fitting of his strong character.

The leukemia is a rare form, chronic myelogenous leukemia known as CML. The disease, although serious,  is not life threatening as his condition can be well controlled. Abdul-Jabbar said himself, "This does not have to be a death sentence." He will have to check in with a specialist, have blood tests and keep up with medication to ensure management.

We wish him the best.
