The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle, a beloved children's book in our home as well as millions of others, continues to celebrate it's 40th birthday year.
Is the "message truly the medium?" In this frenetic world, it probably is. Curling up with a toddler to view Carle's brilliant watercolors as a caterpillar munches his way through life and emerges as a butterfly, probably can be done with a small enough laptop. However, the FEEL of the laptop, the TOUCH that won't become "dog-eared" regardless of the number of times the pages are flipped, can't be compared to a book.
Newspapers may become obsolete but I hope books don't. They've transported us to a different universe (metaphorically speaking of course), given me solace, and provided an outlet for mutual discussion and entertainment.
