Is it my fault my child has ADHD?

Parenting a child with ADHD can be a lonely road. Often parents face the criticisms of family and friends because ADHD is falsely labeled as a result of bad parenting. This couldn’t be further from the truth, but the accusations hurt parents and cause them to withdraw from others. It is important that the parent read and become educated about the disorder to best assist and become a strong advocate for their child. The child and parents will ultimately suffer in silence if the parent listens to the myths about ADHD. Myths lead the parent to try every parenting method only to learn it is not bad parenting that causes ADHD. In fact, ADHD can be inherited or caused by toxins ingested by the mother or child.

Parents should reach out for help from a professional instead of relying upon non-professional opinions. Books are also a great resource for parents please see the recommended book list.  Support can also be obtained through a free local support group in St. Paul and Employee Assistance Programs (EAP). EAPs may be able to refer you to a local counselor and help you find other local resources for creating an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) for the upcoming school year. Check with your employer’s benefits department to see if your company receives EAP services. If your company does not receive EAP, please dial 211 a local service provided by the United Way that provides a free search to MN residents for help within their community. United Way 211 can connect callers with over 40,000 resources for local residents including mental health.
