The award weekend kicks off: The ALMA Awards air tonight!

AP - Eva Longoria Parker co-host the ALMA Awards

Tonight the ALMA Awards will be broadcast on ABC at 8:00 PM but the awards show, itself, took place last night, September 17th. Eva Longoria Parker and George Lopez hosted the show and it was Longoria Parker’s 4th consecutive year hosting the awards show.

The ALMA awards which stands for American Latino Media Artist and cleverly means “soul” en espanol honors Latino Achievement in film, television, music and sports. It’s like the Golden Globes, the Grammys and the Espys all rolled into to one with a Latin flair.

If you’ve never seen the ALMA Awards the first thing that you need to know is that the categories are expanded. This year there are 11 nominees just in the comedy actor in a television show category. Charlie Sheen (Two and a Half Men) happens to be one of those nominees. For those of you who didn’t know or forgot, yes he’s Hispanic. His birth name is Carlos Irwin Estevez. Like his father, Martin Sheen, he adopted Sheen as his stage name.

Other honorees of the night included America Ferrera (Ugly Betty), Ana Ortiz (Ugly Betty) and host, Eva Longoria Parker (Desperate Housewives) in the TV comedy actress category. Adam Rodriguez (CSI:Miami) and Michelle Rodriguez (Lost), no relation, were nominated in drama actor and actress category. Michelle Rodriguez is an interesting choice since she only appeared in Lost for about 5 minutes in the entire 5th season. If she won it will be even more intriguing.

Salma Hayek was the recipient of the Anthony Quinn Award for Industry Excellence and Oscar De La Hoya received the special achievement in Sports Television honor. Penelope Cruz won in the film actress category for Vicky Cristina Barcelona.

To see who else won, tune into ABC tonight.
