Amarillo groups welcome John Burwell for Congress

This past weekend marked the beginning of the “John Burwell for Congress” campaign. A resident of Hawley, Texas, John is running as a candidate for U.S. Representative for District 13 in the 2010 election. As a Libertarian, he believes in the revival of the Constitution in the functions and laws of government, and the preservation of freedom and liberty for all Americans (www.JohnBurwell4Congress.com).

Invited by both the “Amarillo Area Libertarians” Meetup Group and the League of Women Voters, John, joined by his wife, spent the weekend meeting the people and discussing his plans while serving in Congress. The weekend offered great encouragement and enthusiasm. In each case voters came together to discuss their concerns about the path America is currently on. Whether like-minded or of differing opinion, conversations among them surged.

On February 13th, the “Amarillo Area Libertarians” met at The Roasters on S. Georgia Street, inviting John to meet their members and share his views. “I see the way this country is going, sinking more into debt, government growing at an alarming rate, and more of our freedoms and liberties being lost. It is time for something to be done!” Travis, accompanied by his daughter, offered ideas and concerns regarding the economic decisions being made by officials at the federal level. Discussions with members lasted well past the close of the meeting.

Later, John reflected appreciatively on the time with the Libertarian members stating, “They were well informed about the problems facing our country and were willing advocates of finding a solution. I found it encouraging that even the children of the members were knowledgeable of their country’s current situations.” Trina Fournier, the group’s organizer, spoke often of her oldest daughter’s involvement in political blog debates. The future of our country depends on the children of our nation having the information and education necessary to lead.
The Candidate Reception held by the League of Women Voters on Monday, February 15th brought together hopefuls for the Primary Elections to be held on March 2nd. The open format of the reception allowed for candidates and voters to come together, voice concerns, ask questions, and make informed decisions about their voting plans. “It seems that when we are going to the polls to vote, we are voting for the lesser of two evils instead of the one who is best qualified for the job.” One candidate asked to present, took a brief moment to speak as if a parent scolding his children, telling voters to “play nice” with other parties.

As the Libertarian Party does not participate in the Primaries, holding their nominations by convention without the use of taxpayer funds, John’s participation at the LWV reception was as a welcomed guest. While a number of candidates, especially those unopposed, declined the invitation to meet possible supporters, John enjoyed the opportunity to meet the people of Amarillo and the surrounding areas. “I am running for Congress in hopes that I can give voters the option of a qualified, morally grounded candidate.” Though a few met him with indifference, most people firmly encouraged John to keep pushing forward, and get his message of freedom and liberty to the people of Texas.
