Washington DC (Map, News) - Careful planning is a necessity for any car trip into the District this weekend due to street closings caused by major events and construction. "If you're coming into the District, public transportation is the best choice," said District Department of Transportation spokesman Erik Linden. "Driving down this weekend would be a mistake." Saturday morning brings Aids Walk Washington 2007 and the closings of Pennsylvania Avenue Northwest between 13th and 14th streets and periodic traffic stoppages along the rest of the route. The Washington International Horse Show at the Verizon Center, also scheduled for Saturday, will shut down blocks throughout Sixth Street Northwest and F Street Northwest.
On Sunday morning, between 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., the 23rd Annual U.S. Army Ten-Miler will close Memorial Bridge and 12 other stretches of road from Arlington down to the National Mall.
In preparation for the event, the Metrorail system will open at 6 a.m. to accommodate those attempting to get to the 8 a.m. check-in time for the race. For those who test their luck driving this weekend, 25 electronic-message boards will be posted throughout the District to direct drivers and keep them informed of closings. Following those directions is essential, Linden said.
