SAN FRANCISCO (Map, News) - Mayor Gavin Newsom has served District 4 Supervisor Ed Jew with official misconduct papers, which will immediately remove the embattled Sunset politician from his seat.
Newsom is expected to announce this morning that Carmen Chu, a deputy in mayor’s budget office, as a replacement for Jew.
The move comes after Jew ignored requests from the mayor to resign amid federal charges that allegedly Jew attempted to extort as much as $80,00 from small businessman with city permit problems.
Jew pleaded not guilty to the charge Friday and was released on a $1 million bond. He faces an Oct. 11 preliminary hearing.
Jew is also the target of a criminal case brought against him by the district attorney. On Oct. 26, he is scheduled to appear in court to defend himself against nine felony charges, ranging from perjury to voter fraud, for allegedly lying about where he lived in order to run for office last year.
Prosecutors say Jew was living in Burlingame with his wife and daughter and not at the 28th Avenue Sunset district house he claimed was his residence on election documents.
Under the City Charter, Newsom is allowed to suspend an elected official for official misconduct. Newsom would then appoint a resident of District 4 to fill Jew’s vacated seat and present charges against Jew to the Ethics Commission. The commission would hold misconduct hearings and ultimately make a recommendation to the full Board of Supervisors. It would take a three-fourths vote by the board to remove Jew from office

Newsom is a corrupt Nixonian in greasy slick back hair. He thinks he is a master puppeteer. This dude is a bad person.

This is a display of incompetence on the part of our wonderful mayor. Why Newsom took this long to take action is beyond comprehension. And insult to injury he doesn’t appoint the runner up Dudum. Instead he appoints a puppet, a yes man at best.

Well it seems that our mayor has decided to act like a mayor and"suspend" Ed Jew. But in the long run Jew has to resign.

I am an Irish-American resident of the Sunset for over 50 years. Every candidate on my RCV ballot was Asian. I voted for Jew but not as a first choice. I was very put off by the Dudum people who called me and insisted I vote for him simply because he isn't Asian. I also found it very telling that if you drove down his street the only Dudum for Supervisor signs on the block were on his house. Ms Chu is only a temporary appointment. It may turn out that someone else winds up with the permanent appointment when the time comes.

Gavin has forgotten about "Innocent until proven guilty". He must have been drooling at the chance to appoint a person with less than 1 year in the district - I'll guess she is easier to control than Dudem or Jew. She probably doesn't know where Irving street is yet. She won't have to worry about representing her district - she represents Gavin!

I find the current administration at city hall not particularly credible. Jew's replacement isn't the runner-up, Dudum, who lost by 52 votes? arguably a statistical dead heat?

Carmen Chu has been registered to vote at her home on Ulloa since June 2006. She has voted precisely one time in San Francisco, last November. That's the kind of Supervisor we want--one who never votes.

Who's bickering, "more sheep than you"? So far all comments are for letting the close runner-up get his due. Please don't let Newsom's hair gel get in your eyes. Dudum has been a community activist in his neighborhood for a long time. Who is Chu? The mayor can legally appoint his latest hot blonde girlfriend, but there's such a thing as decency, "more normal".

The Mayor has the power to appoint who he wants. If you want it changed, change the laws. Stop bickering. The law gives the mayor the power. Why wouldn't he pick an ally who is also Asian, a woman and from the district.

What's with Newsom's cronyism? Dudum lost out by 52 votes last time, that's practically dead heat. I don't know who this Chu is - and that's the problem. I doubt most people in Sunset know her, either. Why should she represent them, without ever campaigning? My guess is Oldsom is playing cheap shot politics again, giving prominence to some yes-woman who is, conveniently, Chinese. Wouldn't be surprising if she was half-decent looking, either - Oldsom is all about looks and appearances of the new, but it's just same old politics as usual.
