examiNation SF: What do you think of accusations that San Francisco's gang injunctions depend on racial profiling?

I grew up in the Mission,I was more worried about being attacked from the police then gang members,at least with gang members I could fight back,the police hide behind a badge.To be honest their were a few good cops,I remember one of them warning me of some violent cops.

Having grown up here, and lived a great portion of my life in Southern California, its sickening to believe that the gang atmosphere in San Francisco is replicating what I witnessed in most cities of the Los Angeles area. Are we not better than that? What does City Hall intend to do about this problem? Why not crack down hard on the gangs?

Gang injunctions are only short term fixes. The solution is dealing with the root cause of gang membership and criminal activity. Public Defender, Jeff Adachi is correct in saying that the wide spread application of gang injunctions may incorrectly label non-gang members as criminals. The City Attorney's Office must investigate and prove that a person is a member of a criminal "gang" before getting an injunction aganist that individual.

no wonder no one wants to enter the police force in SF/ it seems like they are the enemies/ we have DA that is weak on cop killers, murderers, etc. and now gangs. i've been here 30 years, and giving it 3 more before i move back to the midwest, at least there is law and order and that criminals don't have more rights than victims. look at this city; crime is going through the rough and the sad part this isn't a city its a big town!

Read Freakonomics (if you can't read, there is an audiobook) and realize that being in a gang rarely brings you the pride, power, and treasure that you are looking for. San Franciscans are reaching out to you right this very minute to help. Why be so cowardly? You are somewhere between a deadbeat and a terrorist. Nobody respects you, and nobody will until you learn to respect everybody and everything around you. Now go get to work and stop being such a useless punk. Take advantage of free junior college and job placement services. Ditch your so called friends and make new ones. Your life is very limited at the pace you are going. Shame on you LAWYERS by pulling the race card. You are the true cowards!

tecpatl, I grew up at 25th and Florida. I now own a home in Daly City because the crime in SF was getting crazy. This attitude of yours (rogue cops who don't care) is garbage. I remember many times when the cops responded to crimes that happened in or close to my 'hood. I actually talked to the cops and saw how they were hated, how people threw stuff at them, flipped them off, dropped stuff from windows (especially when I was at John O'Connell) and I never saw these people as fascists. They know people like you hate them and their presence yet they still try and make a difference. Most serial killers are white- big deal! Let's look at crime objectively instead of selectively. Gangs are primarily Hispanic and black. This is 100% undeniable. White gangs are a small presence in prison, and gangs like the Hell's Angels are below everyone's radar. We need to admit that violent gangs exist in our community and not try to explain why they're there. It's dishonest and wrong.

now i've heard it all; gee, every time i turn the tv on or read it in the newspapers, there is a driveby shooting in the mission, bayview, tenderlion, western addition; and the shooting was gang and drug related and those areas are hispanic, etc. my friends that lived in NYC years ago were right SF is turning into what NYC was, gangs and more gangs and more gangs ps when was the last time you heard gangs becing comprised of whites?

They only use it as an excuse to harass the innocent. how many gang members are actually in the mission? a few hundred and they aren't going anywhere because without them, the police would not be able to pass these fascist laws. I'm all in favor of arresting those who commit crimes. However, the passing of this law is a crime and it is complletely un-American. The majority of serial killers are male and Euro-American. Should we pass laws that prevent all male Euro-Americans from buying anything that could possibly be dangerous? This injunction is a cop-out - a lazy way to try to solve a complex problem.The real problem is that parts of the Mission are containment zones and many serious crimes are permitted to happen by the SFPD. Ask any cop about the "bubble theory", off the record, of course. I have.

You shouldn't pass a law for a particular set of circumstances that can have far reaching effects beyond it's intent. This policy, although well intended, is ripe with the potential for abuse. Although I think the SFPD is one of the least racist agencies in the country, it has had its share of Alex Fagan Jr. types. The fact that people - most of whom are unaffected by any of the violence discussed - are so willing to roll back civil rights exposes the growing racism of our diverse community. No one considered these measures when the Chinese gangs were at war.

Shame on you Mr. Adachi. The gang issues in San Francisco and every other city in the world suffer from homeland terrorists we are letting run wild. These injunctions are highly necessary. What is the murder percentage when related to gang activity? Also drugs, prostitution and every other level of crime is associated with these criminals. Quit crying. Racial profiling is just an excuse for these needless gang members to try and get away with their crimes. We shoujld all remember the families of those affected by gangs.

Why should the general public suffer gang related crimes? What we really need is strict penalties. Meaty prison sentences do very litle in the rehabilitation of gang members and simply clog our prisons. I recently visited signapore, and they have a Death Penalty for simply carrying drugs or being armed, along with many other serious punishments for small crimes. The result, a very safe and friendly city. People are going to be afraid to walk down their neighborhood streets by both gangs and police unless we crack down on this senseless violence. If they can't live in our society by the rules, simply kill them off, and help our gene pool.

tecpatl, what you say is garbage. I am Latino too and the Nortenos, Surenos, MS-13 and dozens of other Latino gangs make life miserable for everyone. There is a true crime problem out there ACROSS THE NATION with Latino gangs and it is an embarrassment. And no Latino organizations stand up to them! Instead, when someone complains about these gangs, people just yell "RACISM!!" until the people who complained back down. And so the cycle goes. Aren't you fed up with the basura??

What Euro-Americans refuse to understand is that Latinos and African-Americans are treated completely differently.When there are no Euro-Americans around to witness, the police are brutally racist. Of course this injunction will be racist.The police are racist against Latinos every day all day and I have have experienced it in the Mission for years. Searched for no reason, forced to take my shirt off so the cops can check for gang tattos, forced to take my shoes off so they can turn my socks inside out looking for drugs, thrown up against the wall, threatened with being framed for a crime if I don't cooperate.I've had cops in the Mission tell me "Don't make me find a gun on you.", meaning they will place a gun on me.My crime: being Latino.That is the daily reality that we live with. This injuction will only make life worse. I discovered that the best way to get home from a club in the Mission is to walk close to or with Euro-Americans. That way, cops won't oppress us.

This is just another example of the lunacy of San Francisco. Innocent bystanders' lives are being sacrificed so that Mr. Adachi can win the criminal vote. The Supreme Court has repeatedly ruled that there is no such thing as racial profiling, and that law enforcement officers are free to use their discretion when going after suspects. Is it possible that mostly black and hispanic people are arrested in gang sweeps because they constitute the majority of Hunter's Point and Mission gangs (respectively)? Is it racial profiling if I look for Asians when looking out for gang members in Chinatown. Just the way the FBI target middle-aged white men when looking for serial killers, some members of certain ethnic groups are known to commit certain crimes in certain neighborhoods. That DOES NOT mean that the entire ethnic group is good or bad, it just means that people that commit certain crimes are members of certain ethnic groups. This isn't profiling, it is elementary statist

The only thing that will save the poor, gang members and persons of color is a goverment program! Goverment programs and school teachers can save the world. But only if you believe in them! The goverment does such a great job on things as, saving Iraq, enforcing immigration laws, finding Osama, maintaining roadways and who can forget PUBLIC HOUSING! What the public doesn't understand, is that gang members, have a hard life. They have to keep on the cutting edge of fashion and color match their wardrobe with their friends. It's hard living with your mom in free public housing, your personal garbage doesn't get thrown out on the sidewalk all on it's own now does it? Gang members also must keep up on latest in shiny jewelery and gold plated teeth! You try getting fitted for a grill and then you'll know TRUE PAIN FROM THE STREETS! Don't forget they must get custom rims too! What you heartless folks don't understand is that it's all your fault! Personal responsibilty is scam!

Not all Latinos in the Mission are in gangs, but all gang members in the Mission are Latinos. Not all black people in Bayview and Hunters Point are in gangs, but all gang members in Hunters Point and Bayview are black. THOSE ARE FACTS, NOT RACISM.

Let's get back to the basic issue here. Police need to stop gang violence, which is at the heart of the vast majority of homicides here in San Francisco. Those gangs are black and Latino. So who else are the cops supposed to go after?

There wouldn't be such racial profiling if gangs were more ethnically diverse. They need to practice affirmative action, and then we can lock up old white grannies for petty theft and aggression too, in proportion to grannies' numbers in the overall population.

Identify Gang members and execute them. I don't care what color they are.

The city attorney is just trying to make a name for himself. Why are they targeting the Nortenos and not the Surenos? They are gangs all throughout the city. The entire Mission is infested with gang members. Not saying that I agree with the injunctions because I don't, but they might as well place injunctions on the entire mission. People have rights to wear whatever color they want. People have the right to communicate to who ever they want. I'm from the mission and I've been harassed by the police all the time. If this injunction b.s. gets passsed, then wow, police are just going to have a grand ol' time messing with people. Most of which are going to be innocent civilians. Again, Mrs. Herrara is a joke and he's just trying to get his name out there. Don't you do it.

Well, look who's doing all the killing here. It ain't white NRA members. "Racism" will always be the allegation of the defenders of these vicious parasites because they refuse to acknowledge the brutality level that blacks and Hispanics unleash on the public. Has anyone ever polled violent felons, in or out of prison, to see if they are NRA members, Republicans, or both? We already know the answer of course but liberals will continue to excuse and overlook the criminal behavior of minorities until it's too late. Get tough with criminals, San Franciscans. Dump Kamala Harris and get someone into the DA's office who will seek the death penalty for cop killers and who isn't afraid to put violent offenders in prison where they belong. If you commit a robbery with a gun/knife, 10 year minimum sentence. If you have an accomplice, 5 more years. Carjacking, automatic 15 years. If you use a gun, additional 5 years. Affiliated with a gang, mandatory 5 years added to any sentence.

A surefire way to get yourself killed is to go up to one of these gangs and insult their racial identify. That's because these gangs' frequently include their "genuine blackness" or "raza" when boasting of their gangs' identities. Why, then, is it racists to use these very same bragged-about characteristics to protect the general public from the predations of these gangs? Yes, one can understand how the gangs and their advocates my try to wriggle out of the injunctions with legalese and "weasel words" but the fact is that the injunctions are no more -- and in fact far less -- racist than the gangs themselves.
