Elderly woman killed in Bayview hit-and-run

SAN FRANCISCO (Map, News) - A 70-year-old woman was killed and another person seriously injured in a three-vehicle hit-and-run crash in San Francisco last night from which the suspect reportedly ran on foot.
San Francisco police are searching today for the driver of a 2002 Pontiac who caused the fatal accident in the Bayview District and then fled the scene. The Pontiac collided with a 2003 Nissan pickup and a 2001 Volkswagen Bug, according to San Francisco police Sgt. Neville Gittens.
The San Francisco Medical Examiner’s office identified 70-year-old Celsa-Lidia Moreno of South San Francisco as the fatal victim in the collision, which happened at about 8:30 p.m. Monday in the intersection of Gilman Avenue and Jennings Street.
Moreno was riding in the Nissan pickup truck with another person who was taken to the hospital with serious injuries that were not life-threatening, Gittens said.
Firefighters had to use the Jaws of Life to remove Moreno and her companion from the wreckage, San Francisco Fire Lt. Ken Smith said Tuesday.
“The car was pretty much mangled,” Smith said.
The collision happened in a two-way intersection with four stop signs, Smith said. He said witnesses reported that the man who apparently caused the collision fled the scene on foot.
The driver and sole occupant of the Volkswagen was not seriously injured and refused treatment at the scene, Gitten noted.

I interrupted two cops having a good laugh while stopped at a stop sign on Nob Hill. I asked them if they saw the pick-up that just drove thru the stop sign on the adjacent corner. The cop that was driving told me I shouldn't be standing in the street. I asked the question again and the cop said they were on a call and the squad car slowly pulled away. Q.E.D.
