San Franciscans from a group called Citizens for Halloween say canceling this year’s celebration in the Castro is akin to axing New Year’s Eve in Times Square and that thousands of people will still turn out despite The City’s effort to kill the annual street party.
How do you think The City should handle the Castro Halloween party?

No one can cancel Halloween. Not even King Newsom. Each year should be better than the past....but we need some leadership....not paralysis because of large numbers of people. New York Halloween, West Hollywood Halloween are majic times and on the international tourist map. Every hotel room in San Francisco should be filled. This is a civic opportunity and it will take planning and work and community involvement to bring it to its joyful potential. I left last year's Castro with a joyful feeling. I still smile when I flashback at the creativity and fun. Problems are anticipated when large numbers of people gather. You deal with them. Increasing community involvement, like in Folsom Street Fair, SF Pride, Castro Street, hundreds of volunteers raises the vigilance factor and the safety of all. These are rapids and we should learn from the rough times and invest energy and resources in the predictable celebration. Halloween is coming....enjoy the magic.

This city is no where near NYC. People in NYC behave with respect and dignity. SF is the most narcisistic city on the planet!!! that is why this event has so many problems. This in conjuction with the P.C. government= anarchy!!!!!! People live with no rules out here.

Yes, quick, quell the Halloween celebration before it brings the Castro to it knees and facilitates the decline of western civilization. A couple hundred thousand people come together and you expect them all to be well-behaved? I'm not advocating for violence but I have to wonder if San Francisco has forgotten how to have a good time?

Just move the Halloween Party to AT&T Park. It should be peaceful and nice there. No one is allowed to cancel or destroy the party. The city is way too stricted.

it is absurd to think people are nor going to show up to the castro. i agree it has gotten out of hand but maybe we need a parade like new york has. something for people to do. there will be a forced closure of at least castro street. better to keep it safe and with police presence then foolishly believe it is not going to happen..

I agree with Bevan Dufty, and I believe that the Halloween event must be cancelled. I live in the Castro, and I stopped attending the event because the violence was becoming idiotic, and it was becoming unsafe for residents in the neighborhood. In 2005, I witnessed a gang stabbing by Cala market, and I saw a gay bashing in the neighborhood. In 2006, I decided to stay home, but there was a gun battle only 40 feet from my living room window. We were looking outside the window, and we saw the gunfire and we saw the stampede. If anybody supports this out of control celebration, I would recommend the event be moved to their neighborhood. I am tired of drunken fools invading the neighborhood and harassing the actual residents. By the way, I pay taxes in this City, and I should not be forced to stay in my house because outsiders want to invade are community, and to drunkenly fight or shoot each other.

These fools should go have fun in the Marin a District or Russian Hill or the Mission d

It's too late to build a wall around the Castro. Maybe just an electric fence with guard dogs.

I now live in Virginia, I loved the Castro and the Halloween party. I say party on. Anybody that is offended should say home. Go hang out and have some real fun, let you hair down. I'm not Gay, but they sho know how to party. One of the safest Holloween events in the world, why mess with it? Set an example.

Maybe we gays ought to take a cue from the Neocon Jewish Zionists of Israel and just refuse entry to the Castro---even San Francisco entirely---to all heterosexuals. On second thought: naaaaaah. San Francisco and Israel both would do better to remain true to the spirit of Western freedom and let everyone in and just accept that violence sometimes happens, but that doesn't mean we have to curtail human rights.

You can't compare this to Times Square at New Years. That scene is like a mini-police state in terms of security. It has to be. And people are willing to do that because they know firsthand what it's like to have part of their city destroyed by violence. People here in SF still live in the illusion that their city is safe other than a few bad neighborhoods. Wake up and smell the cappuccino, folks. Your city has become a violent place. Those gangstas with the guns in their hands are not flower children.

I don't know what the city can do about it. You can't make people stop being hateful. There is so much violence here already and this party seems like one big hate crime waiting to happen
