examiNation SF: How do you feel about a city making it illegal to smoke in your own home?

I have asthma and emphasema and must sleep at night with my door open because the man in the apt. below me smokes and I wake up all night unable to breathe. I long for a smoke free environment. This torture is not fair.

Cigarette manufacturers, after they knew that their product was killing smokers, knowingly manipulated nicotine levels to increase addiction. That is murder. Mass murder. Not one of them ever did a day in jail. Now, self-rightious bureaucrats want to jail smokers for smoking in their own homes. Facism at work in America. Meanwhile smokers spend the dollars that help these nitwit lawmakers balance their budget and feel good about themselves. Thank God that I don't smoke. Watch out, because fat people are next up on the hit parade. After all, their obesity is a threat to us all, right? If they weren't selfish they would lose weight. The state can not tolerate that irresponsible behavior. Let's put them in weight reduction camps.

The Anti-smoking Craze & Interference in aperson's indivdual choice has gone to far! This IS supposed to be a country of Individual FREEDOM & Choice, once we let the Government & our Nieghbors snoop & start making OUR lifestyle choices subject to CRIMINAL Arrest & even Jail time, then we no longer have a Democracy. I'll Bet that alot of those people thatwant to make smoking ILLEGAL at home wouldn't want to make drinking Alcholic beverages at home Illegal or those woman who say " Gov't keep your hands off my body" and Religious Fanatics who want to invade the privacy of others, but want their "freedom to punish, or ABUSE, their children any way they see FIT", I was in one of those "families" & it was worse than some one smoking! So think, it could be YOUR choice someone ATTACKS next, second hand smoke is NOT as bad as These Sealots want to make out, smoke DISSIPATES, not that continuous stream that the ads show, Don't be STUPID & give up yours & others Rights so EASY! There should be a law prohibiting smoking in public altogether. People should not be allowed to smoke on side walks, streets, bus stops, city parks any where out side children and adults breath. Smokers are the most inconsiderate people. They litter the streets, sidewalks, public and community landscape with their cigarette trash with remorse. Let them smoke in the privacy of their own home but keep them away from the public community.

According to the UN health organization, there is NO hard link between health and so-called second hand smoke. According to my doctor, these numbers are bogus -- the radical left are relentless!

Your poll language is constructed for you to get votes in one way. It is illegal for play loud music in their own homes if it is bothering others and loud music can't kill me. When second hand smoke kills 35,000 Americans every year it should be illegal to spew it into my own home. That is what the city ordinance is doing: protecting my rights to breathe clean air in my own home.

Belmont has finally done it. What Liberals everywhere want--"A Police State". Under the guise of "We know what's better for you than you do", this City Council has now created a system where any individual who smells smoke can call the police who then can enter your home and investigate this "Horrendous" crime against Humanity. What next California? Passing a law making it illegal to watch Fox news? When will Californians "Wake-up" and see that your Civil Liberties are being taking away from you? Your homes are being invaded and you do nothing!!!

As a person that suffers serious allergies I understand that smoke can irritate peoples breathing and cause sinus problems, but would anyone think it is ok to ban cats? Or how about flowers in public spaces? Freshly cut grass is also very irritating to me and can trigger a serious athsma attack. Should my neighbors not be able to cut their grass?

government should make our streets safe and do other things to better our lives but stay out of our private business. smoking is legal and what someone does in their private home is that is legal is none of the governments business. what's next? bunch of idiot do-gooders. go wait for the oceans to rise.

The poll asks about "smoking in a private home", but does not distinguish between a home far from neighbors and a home connected to others in an apartment, condo, or townhome configuration. When I lived in an apartment, I was forced to re-smoke the cigarettes of my neighbors. I resented it a great deal, but had no protection. If I understood correctly, Belmont is regulating conduct in buildings where cigarette smoke would migrate into OTHER'S homes. The very young and very elderly in those buildings are most at risk from this carcinogen, and maybe the least able to escape such a hazard. This may be seem to be a novel step, but Marriott Hotels did this some time back, and Guardian Management just instituted this very kind of protection for residents and staff in all of the 8000 apartments they manage in five states. Belmont is not the first city to try to protect its citizens from this airborne poison, and will certainly not be the last. They get my vote!

I believe it should be illegal to smoke in your home and around your home when it affects any neighbors. It's easy for someone to say "move if your bothered by it." You can run but you can't hide. I do not hook up to my exhaust pipe of my car why should I be forced to enhale the smoke of a neighbor or neighbors. I say if they want to smoke, inflict yourself not me. Non smokers and people with serious health issues need to be protected. I would like smokers to see what the effect of thier smoking has on me. Yeah, you go Belmont city council.

Belmont???? When I first saw this Headline, I thought, "What is "The City" up to now! Belmont???

Smokers stink. We can smell you coming, so we don't need the city to warn us that you are next door.

I am a non-smoker, but this ban goes too far. Protect me in places where I work and have no choice about breathing your smoke, but let me and others behave like adults and make our own choices in our own homes. If I don't want to live next to smokers, I won't rent there. You can smell it the second you walk up to the door, so it's not exactly a secret.

We are not children and governments are not our parents. They do not need to tell us what we must and must not do in every single situation of our lives. As a landlord, I have the right to make my apartment buildings smoker-friendly or smoker-free. Tenants may choose where they wish to live, based on their own preferences. For those who are not familar with this process, it is clled FREEDOM.
