Article History Aberdeen, Md. (Map, News) - Aberdeen Proving Ground would receive about $287 million for building new facilities and making improvements under a measure passed Thursday by the U.S. Senate.
Maryland lawmakers welcomed news of the approval of the funding, a chunk of the $698 million that would go toward projects at bases in the state to prepare for the influx of tens of thousands of people as a result of the military’s Base Realignment and Closure.
“This legislation is critical to our current and future military mission,” Sen. Benjamin L. Cardin said in a statement.
Under the measure, $245 million would go toward building facilities for the military’s Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance programs, being moved to Aberdeen from Fort Monmouth, N.J.
Of that, $141 million would go to reconnaissance facilities and $104 million to the Army’s Intelligence and Information Warfare Directorate.
The Senate measure also would allot $165 million for Fort Meade and $385 million for Fort Lee, Va., where the Army is relocating the Ordinance School from the Edgewood area of APG.
The funding bill will now have to be reconciled and the final bill needs approval from the Senate and House.
