SAN FRANCISCO (Map, News) - Mayor Gavin Newsom’s true feelings about hybrid cars came out this morning at a press conference touting a new completely electric-powered sports car from the San Carlos-based Tesla Motors. The mayor, while applauding hybrids and the technology that reduces greenhouse emissions, said, “half way is no way.”
“I’m not anti-hybrid,” he added. “I’m still mixed on hybrids.”
“This is electric; this is the real deal,” he said pointing to the 2008 Tesla Roadster. Newsom owned GMC’s EV-1 – an electric vehicle sold in the 1990s – and said he was “fanatical about it” and the promise it held. The mayor is on a waiting list to own a Tesla vehicle.

Until the lefty cowards and liars are ready to allow nuclear power then forget electric cars. Because they're getting their power from coal and other "non green" sources. The lefty that buys the electric vehicle will have to purchase some offsets so some poor schlep in China can breathe dirty air. Hybrid is the best way to go. It produces less total emissions then the electric when you consider the process of making the fuel for the vehicle. But, if the idiots on the left had brains, they'd be on the right.

This guy is an idiot to say what he did! As we all know certain cities in California have a real bad problem with pollution and any advancements to controll this problem should be embraced! I personally had a 2003 H-2 Hummer(10.4 m.p.g.) but now I have a 2007 Toyota Prius (53.2 m.p.g.) Tell the mayor Toyota will introduce a 112 m.p.g. Prius in 2009 maybe that will change his tune! Oh yeah what type of vehical dose he drive? Bob

Gavin is on the right track. Electric cars, like the 2008 Tesla Roadster are good looking as well as environmentally friendly. Now what we need are solar electric home battery chargers (already available) for the electric cars, a more affordable Tesla, solar electicity delivered through the existing PG&E power lines - and we will be well on our way to solving the problem. It is better to be part of the solution, than to be part of the cause of the problem. We will end up with great transportation and (almost) free fuel - making more of our dollars available to buy what we want and need.

Yea, good for Gavin. When there are real, viable alternatives to gas, it sends the right message to the oil companies that have monopolized the auto industry (who are probably in bed with the auto industry) for far too long. I feel this is a major reason why gas prices have been going down more consistently.

What are the environmental costs of electricity generation required to recharge the car? Coal fired electric power plants generate huge quantities of toxins, particulate pollution, and contribute to mercury poisoning of lakes and acid rain. Mining coal is a dangerous and filthy business. Nuclear power generates waste that is impossible to safely dispose of. When it comes to energy, there is no free lunch.

Good for Gavin. If he wants an electric car, fine. Most of us don't. We don't have time to recharge the thing every few hours. Driving to Napa Valley? Out of town to visit family? Good luck. Hybrids are fine. And I don't give a rat's a** about "global warming".
