Well-known Baltimore defense lawyer Warren A. Brown was out to dinner Friday night when he got a disturbing call from his daughter: There was a Jeep in the pool of the family’s Spanish-style Ashburton home. Police said a man was fatally shot during an attempted robbery around midnight and crashed through a wall outside Brown’s house, landing in the pool. Brown said a male passenger — dressed as a woman — survived the crash. The Examiner interviewed Brown to learn more about the incident.

What was that phone call like with your daughter?

She called and said, ‘The wall is in the pool.’ Then she called back and said, ‘There’s a car in the pool.’ There were cinder blocks hurled 30 yards from the wall. It looked like Hurricane Katrina hit us.

This makes you want to leave the city?

I’m thinking about getting out of the danger zone, moving to some place where they’ve got other issues to worry about, like mosquitos and cow manure — not a dead body ending up in your swimming pool.

Why do you think crime is getting worse in Baltimore?

This city is crazy. No matter what the police do, it’s not going to make a bit of difference until the [city] state’s attorney’s office does a better job identifying the real dangerous guys. But you don’t hear any mayoral candidates even alluding to that. They’re afraid of offending Pat Jessamy.

You sound like you’re ready to run for office again. How can you do that if you move to the county?

I would run, if I could afford it. Once the criminals started seeing their buddies getting slammed, they would think twice before they started to employ violence. Ashburton should be a safe place — there are judges, lawyers and doctors here. But the criminals are here too.
