Owings Mills (Map, News) - The new Garrison Forest Middle School in Owings Mill officially opens at 11 a.m. Sept. 5 during a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 300 Garrison Forest Road.
Stephen McManus, head of the new building, and Peter O’Neill, head of the entire Garrison Forest School, will host the event.
The middle school is pursuing designation as one of 27 new Maryland Green Schools and five Maryland Green School Centers.
There are eight green schools in the Baltimore area.
In order to reach green school designation, the new school will meet benchmarks in curriculum and instruction, operation and design of school building and grounds, and school and community partnerships.
Garrison Forest School spokeswoman Lauren Perlin said it generally takes 12 months to acquire status as a green school, which must be environmentally sustainable.
