Muni has launched a major project to increase pedestrian safety at two busy intersections in The City’s Sunset district where pedestrians and N-Judah light-rail trains both cross with the green light - a dangerous situation for walkers, especially senior citizens and children, neighborhood residents say.

The $250,000 project for the intersections at Ninth Avenue and Irving and Judah streets is entering the planning and conceptual engineering phase. But, when it is completed - the projected date is in 2009 - there will be countdown signals for pedestrians and sensors that detect when light-rail trains are approaching.
