SAN FRANCISCO (Map, News) - The San Francisco area is singularly the best for singles because of its culture, nightlife, number of singles, online dating numbers and "cool," according to a new report.
The City took over the top spot from Denver, leapfrogging from the fourth spot to number one in this year's Forbes.com "Best Cities for Singles" report.
Many locals agreed that it was a good city to be single in, noting the high number of places and opportunities to meet people out, but after that it was up to you to actually mingle.

Quoting this ""The men in SF area are definitely not good with the "hellos", they either use cartoon pickup lines are just stare all evening. The women around town feels like being stalked. Not very smooth." What are good ways to say hello?

Sexless in the City said some interesting things and seems like an interesting person to chat with on this topic as do others here as well. I would slightly disagree on the comment on native SF women being nuts since most women (people in general really) who reside in the city are not native whether they came from another country or state. I think SF is like a pycho magnet, attracting the worst from all over. It certainly explains SF's decline these past decades. It all goes back to women, I'm afraid to say, because they are the ones with more power in this situation. How can a guy ask a girl out if he's worried she'll think he's a weirdo or worse. Heck, even a good looking man could be dissed by a women with average or less looks. Also, where is a good place to approach a woman. Doesn't seem like any here. Please don't say bars or clubs.

Earth to Rochelle. You ask why guys don't approach you on the street, while waiting for the light to change. Well, they are, how do I tactfully put this? Guess there isn't any way. They are "you know what"! On the other hand, The thought creeps into my mind, like a coal-black creature, with cat's feet. The way this article describes the guys in San Francisco, describes Patrick Bateman, to a T! (See: American Psycho)! If he walks up to you at a red light, and stares intently at you, consider running the other way (FAST)! You aren't that far from where Ted Bundy and the Green River Killer hung out! Have any girlfriends you absolutely hate? Consider fixing "MR. SPECIAL" up with them first! Like hiring a food taster, with a twist!!!

As much as I love SF I hate it for the fact that it is impossible to meet some one who shares my faith and values and wants a serious relationship that leads to marriage. Coupled with the fact that if you do not make over 6 figures your life is really difficult. So for the people that want to stay single and sleep around with multiple partners (what is with the people in their 50s that never married and are still playing the field) and never commit to anyone (other than a pet) while being shallow, selfish, superficial, cocky arrogant, feeling entitled and for the opposite sex also lacking firm round lower extremities - it is probably mecca - a great place to be.

Men in this city, and especially men who grew up here, are used to having their b*lls cut off by chicks who vent their feminist frustrations on them, so yeah, they're very timid. And Sexless is right... about 10% of the people who live here are clinically insane, and I'm not just talking about the homeless. Neurotic, severely bi-polar, paranoid, or just downright psychopathic... just what I want in a woman.

It's a great place to STAY single, that's for sure! It's a city of careers over relationships, looks over substance, and dogs over families. Oh, and let's not forget one of the highest rates of mental illness in the country, so who knows what kind of Mr./Ms. Goodbar you got on your hands. Why are people generally unfriendly and so full of themselves here? Oh right ... unless you can earn close to six figures you can forget about living like a normal human being here. With so much emphasis on money, and the dog-eat-dog corporate lifestyles people have to subscribe to to make that money, why are we surprised at the generally shallow quality of life here in SF?

I guess it depends on the man, or women. I would imagine the cynical, jaded, bitter men (or women) probably don't get many "hellos" while those that are open, personable and comfortable in their own skin tend to get a lot more.

I have a feeling the comments are going to turn into a gender blame game, but you can't forget that it's a cyclical reaction -- to which ALL the sexes/persuasions -- interacting -- contribute.

I agree, the only good looking "normal" women are tourists or girls who live in the suburbs who come into town. The native San Franciscan females are screwed up in the head.

S.F. has the highest percentage of FEMINAZIs. SF Bay Area has the highest percentage of men in the nation. Thus, SF is the best place for females but the worst place for males.

I'm surprised to read that there is a concern of men being less agressive here. Interesting, because in many ways, I'll go approach women and they act like it's too aggressive even though it's done politely. It's like the women here don't want to be asked out by men. I'm not the only one who seems to notice this. Perhaps they only want to talk at places where alcohol is served. Women should go up to men more or be more obvious if they are showing interest in someone. Maybe the women are just more responsive and less like cold fish in NY than SF.
