A joint venture between two local construction firms has received a contract valued at a minimum of $334 million to build the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency’s East Coast headquarters.

Clark/Balfour Beatty-NGA, a partnership between Bethesda-based Clark Construction and Dallas-based Balfour Beatty, which has a regional office in D.C., received the contract from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Though the contract has a base amount of $334 million, the entire project is valued at approximately $1.2 billion, according to Army Corps. spokesman Christopher Augsburger.

The Clark/Balfour Beatty partnership was created exclusively to bid on the contract, Augsburger said.

The first portion of the contract is for integration services, as well as construction related to site work, the central utility plant and other supporting facilities, according to the Army Corps’ statement.

Neither Clark nor Balfour Beatty returned calls for comment by press time.

NGA is required by the Department of Defense’s Base Closure and Realignment to consolidate its East Coast operations at Fort Belvoir by Sept. 15, 2011. The Army Corps began taking bids on the construction project in April, but cannot disclose how many firms bid on the award because of contract law, Augsburger said.

The NGA building is expected to house 8,500 of the up to 19,000 workers expected to relocate to Fort Belvoir over the next four years.
