The fatal shooting that took place early Sunday in downtown Baltimore is one of two shootings in parking garages this month, but police and garage officials say such violence is rare in the structures.

Two people suffered non-life-threatening injuries July 5 after a gunman shot at them in a garage at Park Avenue and Mulberry Street.

Police were unable to provide a motive for the attack.

In Sunday’s shooting, a 25-year-old U.S. Army corporal was shot to death at the Harbor Park Garage, at 55 Market Place, by a Baltimore police officer.

Police reports state the soldier fired a large-caliber gun at the officer, who was trying to break up a fight.

A spokesperson for Harbor Park Garage said Tuesday that officials were not issuing a comment about the shooting.

However, Baltimore Police Department spokesman Donny Moses said there is no need for people using public garages to fear for their safety. He said Sunday’s shooting was an isolated incident.

“At this point we don’t feel these are spikes in crime issues,” Moses said. “People should just use common sense and be aware of their surroundings.”

Crime in downtown parking garages tends to be thefts of items from vehicles or vandalism, garage officials said.

Wilbert Bethea, a spokesman for Landmark Parking Inc. garage in downtown, said that in the few years he has managed the facilities there have been no problems.

“People are locking their vehicles,” Bethea said. “Plus, we have security walks every hour on the hour.”

Things are also under control a few blocks away at the Inner Harbor Garage, spokesman James Jones said.

He said that in the past year, “spurts” of incidences were usually the work of repeat offenders.

“Sometimes if a vehicle is locked, they’ll break windows, but that doesn’t happen often.”
