Baltimore City Councilman Keiffer Mitchell, who is running for mayor, wants the FBI to look into crime statistics in the city.
BALTIMORE (Map, News) - Something at the Baltimore City Police Department smells fishy to mayoral candidate Keiffer Mitchell, who on Sunday called for a federal audit of the city’s crime statistics.

“Murders take place in the context of aggravated assault,” Mitchell said. “Murders take place in the context of robbery. Murders take place in the context of a drug deal gone bad. Most sensible people are scratching their heads trying to figure out: If the murders are up and the shootings are up, how in the world do you expect the citizens of Baltimore to believe that violent crime is down?”

The Baltimore City councilman will deliver a letter today asking for a Federal Bureau of Investigation audit, he said.

Mayoral candidate Del. Jill Carter has called for an independent audit of the city’s crime statistics, which show a 16 percent increase in homicides and a 32 percent increase in shootings, but a 17 percent decrease in violent crime.

In response, Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon’s spokesman Anthony McCarthy said, “If we can find a third party to audit crime statistics, we’re all for it.”

City Police Union President Paul Blair said officers often complain about commanders urging them to reclassify aggravated assaults to avoid increasing the violent crime statistics.

“Do I have documents to prove it’s being done? No,” Blair said. “Do I still get calls complaining about it? Yes.”

Blair, who supports an independent audit, said the union would vote tonight on its endorsement for mayor.

No man of honor or integrity would disrespect his own father. Keiffer Mitchell has no conscience. He would be the worst of the bunch for mayor, including Dixon, who also has an obvious breach of good character.

I think it's a shame that we get so far off track. There are far greater issues we could print. School, crime, misdeeds in office, budget and all the wrongs that continue with in our own gov't. Why can we not find one honest person to help run our city? there are a lot of jobs that need to be terminated and the system rebuilt. I think all of Balto. city agencies should have a yearly audit preformed by someone way outside our gov't. Maybe with better checks and balances we might start to run a better city.

mitchell is a phony . where was his request when jill Carter and ken Harris ordered audits under chef o'malley, master chef of cooking books? Mitchell couldn't stand up with steel crutches. I'm sick of his grandstanding, no action, plans. he will not get my vote.

Come on, really people. The Police Department has been under direct control of the Mayor for YEARS! It began with the O'Malley administration and continues today. You want the crime statistics explained, look no further than City Hall. Your Mayor does this behind closed doors with the Upper Command Staff of the Police Dept. Why is crime up? Mayor Dixon cut overtime for police did she not? Now crime is up. So this should be a big awakening for people who though police were robbing the system doing nothing. You asked for less overtime for police and that means less police on the street. So what the public asks for is what they get. Pay the police what they deserve and you will get results. There is only so much you can do with an 8 hour shift and when the aggressive units are out the thugs go inside. They are not stupid, they know the schedules. . . Oh here is a solution Baltimore: Start Saying GUILTY and you may not have these problems. Oh, I am sorry the police are always wrong...

When the FBI arrives in town will it: A. Reclassify all of the murders as suicides. B. Burn down City Hall, kill everyone inside, and blame it all on Mayor Dixon. C. Both A and B.
