One truck spilled piping-hot tar near Dumfries, and another struck an Interstate 95 overpass in Garrisonville.
The incidents caused no injuries but spurred traffic delays and left crews with challenging cleanup sites and damage assessments.
Hazardous materials crews responded when a tanker truck sprung a leak near where U.S. Route 1 intersects with Possum Point Road in the Dumfries area.
It was a “sticky mess” and a major traffic problem Thursday afternoon, Prince William County police spokeswoman Sgt. Kim Chinn said.
Another tractor-trailer hauling a large empty tanker struck a bridge on I-95 southbound near Garrisonville in Stafford County, causing damage to the overpass, Virginia State Police spokesman Sgt. F.L. Tyler said. One lane was closed for two hours while the truck was removed.
