Laurel woman arrested in sale of alcohol at event

LAUREL, Md. (Map, News) - Prince George’s County police recently arrested a 33-year-old Laurel woman in the sale of alcohol during an after-hours event at the Langley Park Boys and Girls Club.
According to police, undercover agents purchased alcohol from Idaratou Ceesay on July 1 at about 1:30 a.m. She is charged with the unlawful selling of alcoholic beverages without the required license.
Special Assistant Lt. Henry White, who was at the scene on the 1500 block of Merrimac Drive, said the event wasn’t sponsored by the Boys and Girls Club.
“They rent the club out to different people so they can [generate] proceeds to maintain the Boys and Girls Club,” White said. “There were no kids there.”
Maryland Comptroller’s agents also participated in the operation and confiscated 111 bottles of distilled spirits, 48 bottles of wine and 215 bottles of beer, police said.
White said police had been to similar events before where alcohol was on the premise, but they had never witnessed an actual sale.
“When we kept getting the complaints, we decided to do an enforcement,” he said.
Police had received complaints about “drunkenness and trash left on the property,” White said.
Groups can have alcohol at the functions but can’t sell it, White said.
As to whether charges would be brought against representatives of the Boys and Girls Club, White said, he was unsure.
“It’s an ongoing investigation,” he said.
According to White, police are in the process of trying to identify who is responsible for the club “to ensure they don’t allow that type of activity to continue.”
Club President Julie Moses said her husband, the club’s treasurer, rents it out for events such as weddings, birthdays and baptisms.
“The club is rented out and everybody has a contract,” she said. “And under our contract we would not tolerate any illegal activities at all.”
She said the Boys and Girls Club officials couldn’t be charged because they aren’t doing anything illegal.
“We are renting the club out to take care of the county children,” she said. “To tell you the truth, I want them to stop the harassment.”
Moses said the county and police are constantly harassing the club because of an ongoing land dispute with the county.
