Fiscal 2007, which extends from July 1, 2006, to June 30, 2007, showed an increase of 1.1 percent, or 2 million people, in ridership to 207,907,332 riders.
This compares to fiscal 2006, in which 205,604,151 rode Metrorail.
More people also rode Metrorail during June than any other month in the year.
June had 19,085,358 riders, averaging out at about 772,826 riders per weekday.
Seven of the 10 highest ridership days were also in June, with the highest, 805,153, on June 22.
“The ridership totals for last fiscal year and the month of June were phenomenal,” Metro General Manager John Catoe said. “Typically, we see a spike in June as the region sees an influx of visitors riding along with our regular customers. However, the beautiful weather, the Washington Nationals and high gas prices all contributed to bring record ridership to Metrorail.”
Ridership also was up for July Fourth.
Metro spokeswoman Lisa Farbstein said that as of 11:13 p.m., ridership since 7 a.m. that morning had reached 499,602 riders.
“At the same time last year, in comparison, was 436,766 riders,” Farbstein said.
