Annapolis (Map, News) - The Anne Arundel County Council unanimously voted to raise fines for handicapped parking space violators to $500.

The bill will hike the fine from its current rate of $100, and is expected to generate an additional $140,000 in revenue.

The move comes after several complaints about able-bodied people parking in handicapped-designated parking spaces. Police officers do have the liberty to waive the fine.

The council also unanimously approved placing a 10 acre lot in Annapolis up for sale. The property is being eyed by the Veterans of Foreign Wars as home for a county veterans’ hall.

County officials said Monday night that they are negotiating the property’s future with the VFW, environmentalists who want to preserve the six wooded acres of the lot and the surrounding community.

The council also unanimously voted to raise the lease rate for cell phone carriers’ antennae from $25,000 to $35,000, as well as leasing space on water towers in Crofton and Arnold to T-Mobile.
