Comcast SportsNet’s Chick Hernandez, left, and Maryland men’s basketball coach Gary Williams will host CSN’s nightly half-hour broadcast, “Tee Time at the AT&T National” lasting tonight through Sunday at 7 p.m.
WASHINGTON (Map, News) - When you think of Gary Williams, you see a man pacing the sidelines, getting referees and yelling encouragement to (or yelling at) his Maryland Terps from the bench at the Comcast Center. In short, he is an intense competitor and successful NCAA basketball coach.

But Williams is a man of many talents and starting today and running through Sunday he will be an integral part of Comcast SportsNet’s coverage of the AT&T National hosted by Tiger Woods. Not a bad gig for the full-time coach and part-time golf analyst.

“Tee Time at the AT&T National” debuts tonight from 7-7:30 p.m., and will air each night throughout the week following SportsNite at 6:30 p.m. Comcast SportsNet’s Chick Hernandez will join Williams as they host the 30-minute live show with interviews and analysis immediately following each day’s round. “Tee Time at the AT&T National” will also feature an hour-long show on Sunday following the championship round.

Hernandez on what it is like working with Williams: “Gary and I have a good relationship, he is fun to talk golf with and he loves to play. As a matter of fact he belongs to Congressional and knows the course very, very well. This will be the third time that Gary and I have worked on a golf tournament with him being an analyst and he really does his homework and does a great job. Having Gary has a wonderful side benefit to us because so many players are college basketball fans. The players want to come on the air with us and talk to him about college basketball and he gets to talk golf with the top pros — how good is that?”

Host Tiger Woods will be on be on the program Tuesday with Gary and Chick to layout all the details of his charity. Also Jill Sorenson will be the reporter on site all week beginning with today’s practice rounds.

D.C.-based XM radio will offer fans portable XM satellite radios for the day to the first 1,000 spectators at no charge, so they can listen to the tournament. XM will have complimentary trial booths at the two designated main entrances at the Congressional Country Club. XM is the exclusive home to PGA radio and covers all the stops on the tour.

“We have exclusive coverage on XM channel 146 every week, in cooperation with PGA Radio,” said XM spokesman David Butler. “We are the home for golf fans and we could not be more excited about working with Tiger to give fans a change to listen to action while they walk the course.”

On the TV side, the Golf Channel will have special programming all week with hole by hole coverage starting at 4 p.m. Thursday and Friday. The weekend coverage will be on CBS Saturday and Sunday from 3-6 p.m.

Around the airwaves

Hokie Nation: ESPN will kickoff its “College GameDay” season from Blacksburg, Va., when Virginia Tech hosts East Carolina on Saturday, Sept. 10. The pregame broadcast will begin at 10 a.m. and the noon game-start time on ESPN will feature Mike Tirico on play-by-play and analysts Todd Blackledge and Bill Curry. This will be the first football game on campus since April’s massacre, the deadliest in U.S. history, when a student killed 32 people and wounded another 25 before committing suicide.

Ripken ready to talk baseball again: Cal Ripken Jr. made his return to baseball at 4 p.m. Sunday when he joined Ernie Johnson Jr. and Tony Gwynn on the Major League Baseball All-Star Selection Show on TBS.

» TBS and TNT will be the home to the National League Divisional Series, American League Divisional Series and the National League Championship Series — all in HD.

Re-Upping with the NBA: Turner Sports along with ESPN/ABC have renewed their contracts with the NBA. Commissioner David Stern stated how pleased he was with the league’s relationship with his TV partners. The new deal will start next season and run through 2016.

Nine is fine: 9 News Now sports are making a real run at NBC 4’s dominance at 11 p.m. According to a recent trend the Arbitron ratings for 11 p.m., WUSA 9’s numbers go up from 11:15-11:30 p.m. to a 4.5 while NBC 4 drops to a 4.4. This means that people are tuning in to watch the sports on WUSA 9 and then at 11:35 p.m., NBC 4 re-captures the numbers when “The Tonight Show” comes on.

The ratings movement shows that WUSA 9, with its early reporting on the LaVar Arrington motorcycle accident and Christian Guzman’s season-ending surgery seem to be paying off in the post George Michael-era in Washington.

See ya next year: So long to Tony Kornheiser and his entertaining troupe of characters on WTWP radio 105.7 FM/1500 AM. We will miss his smart and funny morning show until he returns from his duties on Monday Night Football. We will miss Mr. Tony’s show with Nigel and the gang — see ya in February.

Drew Forrester is good???? You are seriously kidding right? I've heard better journalistic value being precipitously spewed with loud liquid sounding noises from the south bound end of a north bound mule! Drews sports knowledge is severely challenged (except for Golf and maybe soccer)to which no one of any value or integrity would endorse anything he says or claims! Drew is a huge turd on the coattails of Nestor. If 1300am did daily "local" morning sports talk on days other then Monday for morning drive, WNST would never receive a call until Bob H. came on! Having been exposed to radio talk show hosts from the west coast to the east coast and all contiguous geographic locations above and below, I can easily say that Drew has NO knowledge of mainstream sports, no skills as a reporter and no value to airwaves in any segment of radio! Drew would do better to stay away from sports reporting and stick to either barn cleaning, septic tank flushing or better still, keeping his mouth closed!

What Baltimore really needs is someone who thinks big league and will go after it. Why in all hell would I go to D.C. to see pro sports there for when we could have it here with a new place? For that matter I am not about to go somewhere else just because some stuffed shirt can't think big league. And with a biger and better place we could also get bigger and better concerts here also. So stop thinking so small and get with the BIG LEAGUE.

This is the most asinine interview I've read this week. How can he honestly say that minor-league sports won't work in the city when he and Ed Hale are the causes of poor dates being released to previous minor-league tenants. If minor league sports are so bad, then why is the Blast so successful? Because of great marketing and relationship with the arena. If he weren't so hostile to others, then it would succeed. I hope that when the arena gets torn down and a new arena goes in its place, then he won't be in charge of this one.

I, for one, am estatic that Bob Carpenter is back! I thought he and Sutton did a great job last year as I watched more baseball games last summer than I ever have previously. I definitely enjoy his easy style and the "relationship" between he and Don Sutton. Both guys don't try to make themselves bigger than the game. For the reader who wants Mr. Williams to "educate the public" as to why Bob Carpenter is such a horrible annoucer, I would say it's time to get off the couch every once in a while, maybe join a softball league or something. Sounds like you are watching too much tv!

Bob Carpenter is horrible. Only by small-market standards can a homer, who spews cliches and exhibits little knowledge of the game, be seen as a good announcer. DC isn't a small market but has no expectations for its sportscasters. Jim, you should be educating the public, explaining why announcers like Carpenter are weak. Instead, you fawn all over them and artificially elevate their status. Carpenter deserved to be fired and his return is a shame.

Baltimore sports talk radio is abysmal, the only host on wnst that is tolerable is Bob Haynie, the Saturday show with Bruce Cunningham and Arron Wilson is quite good also. As far as 1300 and wbal, well Anita Marks isn't worth even commenting on, and Tom ("the fans don't understand") Davis is nothing but an apologist for the dismal Angelos regime at the Orioles, Steve Davis on wbal is nothing more than a smart-ass, and his attempts at humor often are embarrassing. Tom David would do much better in this time slot and he is repected. As for Ms. Marks, go find a football game to play in with the boys. Some Cable companies only charge for NFL network DURING the football season and then providing it free during off-season. If the cable company is charging their customers yet directTV is not then what does that tell you? It tells you that the Cable companies are the one’s trying to gouge you! I am a Direct TV subscriber and have had NFL netwrok for several years now and have never had to pay extra for it. I do pay for the privelage to View NFL Sunday Ticket which i am glad to pay for. Shame on the NFL if they do not BAN Vick. Shame on those who will glorify Vick to enrich their pocketbooks. And shame on our society for raising such a scumbag. I am a hunter. I have spent HOURS tracking game which was shot and only wounded. Only once was I personally responsible. Several times people I didn't know but met while hunting just packed up and left wounded game. To a man (and I use the term lightly), they did not grow up in a hunting family. Hey Jim. Don't even compare this case to the Duke debacle. The truth is that a liberal prosecutor wanted to nail some young rich white college kids who happened to be at a party with a trashy black stripper. He crossed the line and much to my surprise was held accountable. It seems that professional sports figures today are exempt from the rules of normal folks. If you believe for a minute that Michael Vick was unaware of what was going on at his house you're just plain stupid. The term "innocent until proven guilty" has no meaning anymore. These losers talk about being men but when it comes down to it they're just overpaid cowards. Sure, they can beat my a** to a pulp because that's what cowards do. The only thing that they have going for them is their physical prowess. I'm sick of working my butt of trying to makes ends meet and these bozo's get treated like royalty. The only reason you and other announcers defend these people is so you have a reason to get paid.

Criminal guilt is not necessary in the court of public opinion. Similarly, a not guilty verdict can mean diddly. (See former running back #32)

Innocent until proven guilty? Hundreds of people who have never had so much as a parking ticket find themselves on the TSA's no fly list, and have spent up to a year "proving their innocence." In the case of Michael Vick--who is probably NOT on the no fly list, despite the "secret compartment water bottle incident--the cliche I perfer is "where there's smoke, there's fire." Less than two weeks after the Duke case became scandal du jour, most of the "smoke" was already suspected as part of the smoke and mirrors attempt by D.A. Nifong to make a name for himself. Nifong made more vows than Liz Taylor to produce evidence to bring the guilty to justice. The dogs discovered on Vick's property may not be PROOF that Vick was involved, but since we are at war based on nonexistant evidence, I'm apt to think the media HAS learned from past mistakes. Vick's denial is like the mom who finds pot in her son's room, and believes he was keeping it for a friend to keep him out of trouble.

I'd double check your WUSA numbers there Jim. oh, never mind, they just made a nice little blow your own horn commercial about it so it must be true. If you check them again, you might find WJLA a stronger threat to WRC at 11pm than WUSA, but why should a fact get in the way of a good story or self promotion. Notice how their little ad attributes The Examiner and not the actual book? Hmmmmmmm....
