A rescue team found a 66-year-old woman more than a day after she was reporting missing from her home.

Nancy Karweit was discovered Thursday at about 9 p.m. lying unconscious under heavy brush about 150 yards from her home in the 8100 block of Elsies Way, said Sherry Llewellyn, a spokeswoman for the Howard County Police Department.

Karweit, who suffers dementia, was transported to Howard County General Hospital, where her condition was listed as critical but stable, Llewellyn said.

She was reported missing Wednesday morning.

Police, Howard County Fire and Rescue employees and dog teams from a professional search and rescue company combed the area around Karweit’s home after her disappearance but could not locate the woman.

Llewellyn said a dog team, searching the area again last night, led rescuers to the woman.

“She was covered by such heavy brush, she was not visible to the searchers who ultimately had to dig through the brush to get her out,” Llewellyn said.
