Howard County (Map, News) -  A Howard County youth remained in critical condition Wednesday after nearly drowning a day earlier at a local pool.

Lifeguards pulled Darren Powell, 5, out of the water Tuesday at Columbia's Bryant Woods pool after noticing the child was not breathing. He was later taken to the Children's National Medical center in D.C.

Powell and about 40 other youths from the Wilde Lake Junior Nature Camp were at the pool when the incident occurred.

A spokesman for the Columbia Association, which runs both the camp and the facility, said the lifeguards "reacted quickly to get the young boy the quick attention that he needed."
