A historic playground in the southeast corner of Golden Gate Park that has been closed for more than a year will reopen in July following $3.8 million in renovation work. Built in 1887, the Children’s Playground is commonly thought to be the nation’s first public playground, according to Recreation and Park officials.

BOARD OF SUPERVISORS

McGoldrick tables plan for even-numbered-year elections

A proposed charter amendment to shift San Francisco’s election cycle so the office of the mayor, sheriff, district attorney, city attorney and treasurer would be voted on in even-numbered years has been tabled for the second year in a row by its author, Supervisor Jake McGoldrick. Members of the Board of Supervisors are also voted on during even-numbered years. Finding no support for the proposal from the committee, McGoldrick withdrew the proposal.

TAXICAB COMMISSION

Cabdrivers sue over alleged ADA noncompliance

About 150 disabled taxi drivers filed a lawsuit on Tuesday against The City and the San Francisco Taxicab Commission, alleging that the entities are not fully complying with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The cabdrivers are calling for a 2003 program — which required a medically trained professional to evaluate and determine appropriate accommodations for disabled taxi drivers — to be reinstated. The drivers say the program was eliminated last year.
