A federal law enforcement officer shot and wounded a man who had broken into his District Heights home early Tuesday morning, according to Prince George’s County police.

Cpl. Clinton Copeland said the suspect broke into the home on the 2300 block of Breton Drive at about 1 a.m.

“He advised the suspect that he was a law enforcement officer,” Copeland said. “The suspect at that time, I guess, ran at him or attempted to tackle him at which point the officer fired.”

Copeland declined to identify the suspect or victim but said the victim is either a customs police officer or a Federal Protective Services officer.

As the incident transpired, Copeland said, the victim’s wife called police. The suspect, Copeland said, was struck in the arm and he was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

According to Copeland, police were in the process of obtaining an arrest warrant Tuesday afternoon for the intruder.

“Once he is cleared through his medical situation,” Copeland said, police would proceed with the criminal process.

The suspect, Copeland said, will likely face charges of breaking and entering, among others.
