Five dogs found dead in Glen Burnie residence

GLEN BURNIE, Md. (Map, News) - Animal Control officers found five dead dogs “in various states of decomposition” in a Glen Burnie residence, police said.
The officers, following up on complaints from neighbors, rescued four dogs and three cats Wednesday afternoon from the house on Furnace Branch Road, said Cpl. Mark Shawkey, a spokesman for the Anne Arundel County Police Department.
The animals were severely malnourished, Shawkey said.
One of the dogs died overnight in an area hospital.
Officers smelled a foul odor coming from the house when they arrived, he said.
Police are searching for the homeowners, who were not in the house at the time. Their names are being withheld, pending charges, Shawkey said.
“It doesn’t seem like there’s been anyone residing there in quite awhile,” he said.
Shawkey said animal control officers have visited the house several times.
They last visited the residence in May in response to calls from neighbors who told police the dogs “were barking and biting, and acting aggressive to people walking past,” Shawkey said.
“At that time it appeared as though the homeowners that
were there at the time were addressing the complaints,” Shawkey said.
Of the five deceased dogs, three were Great Danes and one was a German Shepherd mix. The breed of the fifth dog — officers found its skeletal remains — could not be immediately determined, Shawkey said.
