Jew's lawyer rips local probe as 'politically driven'

SAN FRANCISCO (Map, News) - As felony charges against Supervisor Ed Jew were being announced Tuesday by the district attorney, one of his lawyers called another investigation of the supervisor by the City Attorney’s Office “politically driven” and claimed it was intended to build public opinion against Jew.

Attorney Steven Gruel had choice words Tuesday for the City Attorney’s Office, which is conducting an investigation into whether Jew violated the City Charter by failing to live in the district he represents. The investigation by the City Attorney’s Office was in tandem with criminal investigations being conducted by the District Attorney’s Office.

The City Attorney’s Office sent a letter on Monday to Gruel, which was made public, saying Jew had failed to provide sufficient evidence proving his residency at a 28th Avenue property in which he claimed to live and had a “final opportunity” to do so by Friday. The letter also said Jew had refused to come in for an in-person interview.

Gruel shot back a letter to City Attorney Dennis Herrera on Tuesday, calling the investigation “politically driven.” Gruel said the letter made public Monday was intended to “inflame public opinion against Supervisor Jew” and said it was an effort to “score public opinion points against the supervisor.”

Gruel wrote, “I question your office’s objectivity in this matter and demand that your office immediately and publicly retract the misleading statements given to the media.”

Gruel’s letter prompted a written response from Herrera on Tuesday, which said, “None of your characterizations of our office’s motivation are remotely accurate.” The letter also reaffirmed this Friday as Jew’s last chance to provide proof of residency. Jew faces removal from the Board of Supervisors if found to have violated The City’s residency laws.

The charges:

San Francisco District Attorney Kamala Harris has filed criminal charges against Supervisor Ed Jew. In a statement, the DA’s office alleged Jew lied under oath and falsified documents about living in the Sunset district he represents.

» Four felony charges of perjury for signing false documents, including his declaration of intent to solicit campaign funding, his nomination paper, his declaration of candidacy and his voter registration

» One count of providing a false document

» Three elections code violations associated with the documents surrounding his candidacy

» One count of voter fraud for voting while registered at his 28th Avenue address

In my opinion Mr. Bassin is professional evictor. Make search on his name at sftc.org. He will not hesitate to do dirty stuff. For example, he is also attorney for the landlord of elderly lady that was protected tenant and was evicted about the same time as you. He also handles probates, especially interesting is probate of George Applegate who passed away from heart attack or stroke just few months after making his will. What do you think?

After reading the Federal complaint, I don't understand what leg Jew thinks he possibly has to stand on. He all but pulled a gun on the Quickly people. At this point, his residency is the least of his problems; the Feds have an almost perfect conviction rate. As for the consultant, Robert Chan, keeping a low profile, yea, I'd keep a low profile too. He's named in the Federal complaint as Co-conspirator. Charges against him will probably be coming soon too, unless he cuts a deal where he finishes sinking Jew.

A lot of things will happen to Jew soon enough, but "being exonerated" won't be one of them. As far as "Newsom setting up Jew"...that's a joke, right? The neighbors are liars? The DA is lying? The City Attorney...liar. The FBI..just Gavin's personal stooges, right? Everyone is lying just to GET ED???? Let's be real. Ed Jew is a liar and a criminal folks. He deserves his fair trial and when it's over, he'll continue to get what he rightly deserves; a comfy prison-issued jumpsuit, sturdy government braclets, three meals a day, and a long stay in the Big House with a bunch of new friends to keep the florist company.

It is nice to see the smug look of a man who thinks he can get away with lying and cheating disintegrate into the scared look of a man who is about to be found guilty and possibly sent to prison. Where a person's mail goes is irrelevant. There is no law that tells people where their mail should go. Thank God! My mother's mails come to my house because she suspected her mailman was stealing her social security check. In actuality, her mail went to the neighbor's house when the regular mailman went on leave for hernia operation. My sister's mails go to her office because her ex was signing her name on credit card solicitations. The mail of the former owner of my house still comes to my house even though the guy has been dead for 10 years. Is there a law that says your mail should go where?

I too am rather tired of politicos of color, be they Marion Barry, Clarence Thomas or Ed Jew, playing the race card out of desperation. Jew is especially problematic since he made openly racist appeals to voters (i.e., pull the lever for me, since I'm Chinese-American too!) during the election, which appear to have worked. The notion that he must be replaced by a Chinese-American is exceedingly racist - as another poster noted, his replacement should be the most qualified person for the job. I'm extremely gratified that Dennis Herrera has condemned Jew's attorney for playing the race card in this case and obfuscating the real issues at hand.

Well, that U.S. Congressman Jefferson, who is black, could too play the race factor in regards to the FBI probe, and also indictment against him for embezzling money and the other charges placed against him. Jew knows that he can not win because the money was found in his possessions just like U.S. Congressman Jefferson. Both him and Congressman Jefferson were caught redhanded, so like my parents say admit to what you have done wrong and it won't bite you in the butt in the future. Both brought this upon themselves and Jew is trying to get off knowing there is no way in getting out of this jam. The race card is Jew's only results to get him but where will it take him. Through more legal battles and embarrassment for him and his family. Accept the consequences Jew.
