GLEN BURNIE, Md. (Map, News) - Anne Arundel police are expected to continue searching for a teenager seen with a gun near a Glen Burnie school, Cpl. Mark Shawkey said.
“We plan on having a normal opening and closing of the school [today],” said Tony Ruffin, county schools spokesman.
Marley Middle School students spent the day indoors after someone saw a gun-toting teenager Wednesday near the school.
Police were unable to find the teen, whom one witness saw carrying something that appeared to be handgun, police said. Shawkey said patrols around the school diminished Wednesday after dismissal.
During the search, all doors were closed and monitored, with limited access through the front door. All outdoor and evening activities were canceled.
Officials said the students were never in danger. The teenager was spotted by a motorist just before 8 a.m. at Marley Neck Boulevard and Spencer Road, a half-mile west of the school, brandishing what looked like a handgun and walking toward the school. There were no other reports of the teenager, police said.
“We didn’t have any information to prove to the contrary,” Shawkey said. “Anytime someone comes forward with a report, especially one that close to the school, we’re going to take it seriously.”
Nearby Marley Elementary School and Marley Glen Special School were put on alert during the day.
Parents were notified of the situation via a phone message system, and a notice was posted on the school system’s Web site at www.aacps.org.
Police and school officials said no pervasive problems in the area would explain the incident.
A number of robberies have occurred south of the school on Baltimore-Annapolis Boulevard.

Just to let everyone know, the name of the school has nothing to do with the students who attend it. I'm not saying we are dumb because we surely are not, but it is a regular public school, with regular students.

Honey, I hope you meant that you need to turn the violence off entirely....not just save it for after school. You need to survive long enough th get out of high school and get into college so you can getaway from that stuff. You have more power than you know. DEMAND that security be airtight in your school. Your family and your friend's' families have paid for the right for you to be able to go to school and get a good education without having to watch your back in the bathrooms. Stand up for your rights and take your school back! They think that because you have no vote you have no voice and no power. Prove them wrong!

So how many background checks did these "kids" go through, did they have to wait 14 days to be "not disapproved"? Legal handguns in the hands of law abiding citizens have never been the problem, but politicians always go after them instead of criminals, drug lords and gangs.

A young black male brandishing a handgun...not to worry, I'm sure he is over 21 (he must just look young), passed a background check, waited 7 days and has a Maryland Concealed Firearms permit. He is not at all likely to have gotten that gun illegally, be involved in a gang or drug activity and I'm sure he is a level-headed ,well educated, upstanding member of the community. And if he isn't all these things, on the "bright" side, he hasn't killed anybody *yet*. And even if he does kill someone later, it is all the fault of President Bush and the Iraq War rather than 40 years of one party politics in Maryland.
