A project that would take another 500 cars off the road in Dumfries during the daily commute is expected to advance today.

The Prince William County Board of Supervisors could approve final plans for a $6 million expansion of a crowded 200-space commuter parking lot at Route 1 and Route 234.

“We’ve been waiting for that,” Supervisor Maureen Caddigan said. “We just don’t have enough commuter parking on the Route 1 corridor.”

If approved, the expansion is scheduled for September 2008.

Competition for spaces is tight, and the last spots are gone by 7:30 a.m., said Thomas Blaser, Prince William County director of transportation.

“We need people off the roads,” Caddigan said, “but they need a place for their cars.”
