They should have hired this company to do the bridge onramps in San Francisco. That is a joke -- but not a very funny one when you are stuck in the ridiculous 24x7 traffic jam.

I'm willing to bet that the accident was because the driver fell asleep (or at least "nodded off" however briefly). A lot of trucks have to drive late or early in order to legally use certain lanes or roads, but that doesn't make 'em any less tired. If the speed limit's 65 on the highway, but 45 on the turn, that would explain the speeding too. Sounds like an accident to me, someone driving a few too many hours.

man!! if thay can fix that bridge this fast? Why dose all the other goverment jobs take years? The gov may have found a way to cut gov spending so we can have a taxe brake.

I followed the crash and the regulatory fall-out from day one. Here, Pedro Nava is just grandstanding in front of any camera that will have him. Driving tankers already requires an endorsement to a license, to show the extra training. Hauling food grade is actually more difficult than gasoline cuz gas tankers have internal baffles to prevent slosh while milk tankers do not. You people need to know that everthing you bye comes by boat than truck but mostly by truck by land . When higher regulations comes along it also brings with it higher cost of trucking that is pased on TO YOU and makes everthing go up look what it cost to go grocery shopping now, Guss how hard its gona be for your grand kids, You want them to live on the streets.. An artical i read stated that us world wide there were less than 6000 truck wreacks with less than 3000 death and 48000 auto acidents with 38000 deaths and yes this is all tracted by the fed gov so next time you go in store and come out with a haft full basket when u usto get a full basket of food.. thank your govermont for higher regulations

It’s ridiculous that there wasn’t a more thorough investigation on this. I still have a picture that shows a yellow glow the morning after the crash. The picture is from this exact paper. They took some of their more controversial pictures offline. They would shut the entire ferry system down for one Muslim who leaves a backpack behind, but they didn‘t even wait 24 hours before beginning the demolishing of this section of one of the most major highways in the country. I’m not sure how they are working this for a profit, but I hope people aren’t forgetting that Schwarzenegger’s Dad was a member of the Nazi party.

Accident?? I thought the trucker was speeding. If so, I'd hardly consider it an accident. Accidents are unavoidable; slowing down might have prevented this from happening.

Some of you folks really crack me up. Heck if you are trying to find someone to blame, why don't we go so far as to make an assumption that there may have been a car which changed lanes in an unsafe manner and caused this driver to crash. Don't try and tell me you have never cut an 18 wheeler off on the highway and kept on driving. Each of us has done something truly stupid when we are behind a steering wheel. This was an ACCIDENT!!!

Is our goverment a moron? We have a tanker wreck that is an accident and he wants to take it out on the truckers. I didn't see any stiffer regulations when he t-boned a car with a motorcycle and had no licence. Why doesn't he do something that's gonna help us instead of looking for ways to get what little money we have left? When he makes more strick regulations, we all pay higher groceries, higher everthing. We don't all have hundred thousand dollar incomes. It might serve him well to remember that almost everything that needs to be moved, moves over land via truck.

Is it so obvious? A bridge collapses under extreme heat. It has to be the contractor that failed to build it properly. Or better yet....The Driver has acriminal record, so he's definitely a Terrorist. Get real People!!! A normal everyday guy had a terrible accident. The accident caused a fire that created an extreme amount of heat under a bridge. A normal bridge. It happens. Here's a better one. The Trucking Co. is in league with the bridge builder. They recruited the Convict to be a Suicide Driver and melt the substandard bridge so they could build it again and charge more money, all the while giving paybacks to the elected officials to look the other way. The rapid transit system will see a boost and also pay off both the Trucking Co. and the Bridge Builder for there part in increased revenues. The conspiracy HAS to be bigger than you can imagine!!! Oy Vay!!

And now for the bad news ...

I'm with you, Josh. It was proven that the contractor who built the support pillars for the Cypress Structure cut corners and did not use the amount of cable called for by the plans. Was this built by the same contractor? NO one seems to be asking that question.

I'd seriously investigate the quality of construction- the rebar used in that roadbed was grossly inadequate--someone got paid off, or just completely incompetent. I've seen better rebar work done on bike paths and work ways. I'd check the integrity of the entire roadway.

Wouldn't a reasonable person think that prior behavior sets a pattern for the future. I.E. Drug Convictions, Prison Time. Extreme indifference to the obvious may lead to this type of occurance. Is TSA trustworthy?

Iheard someone say they are looking for terrorist, my question is this driver is fresh terrorist or can someone pay to become a terrorist. Now if terrorist why not happen during traffic time, look this property belong to whom? this type of question very high IQ,. This is not a firsttime I saw this type of incident. Now newyorker help us understand, you saw me siiting in the park area why the truck hit the pole and it's damages. why and what hapeen to this truck driver?

It's funny, I read the comments posted and think to myself, "Everyone's on a Witch Hunt". Half the postings are trying to find someone to blame. The other half are trying to find someone to sue. Get a grip people. Sometimes accidents happen. Does it inconvenience us? Yes. Will life go on? Yes. Even convicted criminals, once they've served their time, need employment. Driving a truck is not an easy life. You should try it sometime. The risk a person puts himself in to drive one of these is tremendous. Be thankful you have individuals who will do these jobs for you so you can have gas for your vehicle. Instead of "Hunting the Witch" maybe you should focus on helping to find a solution. And it doesn't have to condemn anyone who tries to make a living. Ask yourself, have you not ever had an accident? The majority cannot respond no or our insurance rates wouldn't be so high. Final thoughts, if you don't like the way your elected officials handle issues of this nature, Vote them out

Once again The Bay Bridge is down, Glad to see nobody was hurt. Will B.A.R.T. be running more trains? Will the Ferry Systems be running more Ferries? This is the true test of how prepared The Bay Area really is. Every time there is an issue, there is no escape route. Sad part is even when everything is running good; it takes over an hour to get to a 15 minute destination. EXACTLY WHY I LEFT!!! 32 yrs I lived there; poor security on public transportation, insufficient number of employees and EVERYBODY in such a big hurry to get to nowhere. Slow down a little bit, don't take life so seriously; NOBODY gets out alive! Thank God I now reside in the peaceful Mid-West. There may be nothing but corn, beans, beef and pork meat plants here, but we surely don't have near the hassles my home town does. God Bless San Francisco and all of you who reside there; I pray The Lord will show you Mercy.

San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom said the accident showed how fragile the Bay Area's transportation network is, whether to an earthquake or terrorist attack. ISN'T THIS THE SAME MORON THAT WANTS THE CITY TO BE A SANCTUARY FOR ILLEGAL ALIENS?????

Please don't come into the city. Telecommute if you can, take BART or the Ferries if you must. And don't forget: watch out for bicycles and pedestrians. A lot of our residents are elderly or disabled.

First of all, what kind of "truck" was it? Was it the dual trailer rig that is no longer in use in many states because of inherent handling differences as load size changes between empty and full. Many states haul only single truck tanks any more because it takes a very skilled professional driver to handle double trailers with fuel or any other liquid. How long was the driver at work that day? Is he a citizen? When was the vehicle inspected last? What company owns the vehicle? What company owns the load? how experienced is the driver? Why is hazmat hauled over these sections of road? The last major event like this killed people and changed the movement of fuel from the East Bay thru the Caldecott tunnel. Can't they take the last exit on and first exit off? Why can't we transfer fuel by boat? WHO OWNS THE TRUCK AND THE FUEL AND WHY DID THE PAPERS AND OTHER NEWS NOT REVEAL THIS INFORMATiON? How many other jobs does the driver have?

Was it only the tank driver's fault or was there someone else involved in the accident?

If such an incident had happened anywhere near DC, the truckdriver would be in Guantanamo by now, being interrogated in anyway they felt like... This would be viewed as a giant and massively disruptive version of the infamous Iraqui 'car bombs', a deadly weapon. But since it only incapacitated one of the most liberal areas of the USA, in a location that couldn't have been more perfectly chosen to bunk up the city for months, looks like another California freeway crash, ho hum! Let the media treat it as such, since the media has been on Bushco's agenda all along.

My thoughts are that it will take years to fix just like it is taking caltrans years to fix and put in a simple off ramp off i880 and mission which cuses bottleneck the past three years I have lived here. I think Caltrans is going to milk this one two causing long unneccesary delays to boost their funds and defraud the public.

This article did not provide enough information at all. In the future, please report more thoroughly. HELLO, what trucking company was this? What is their safety record? Can they be held liable for the monetary costs, or do we the tax payers have to pay for it? Who was the driver? What is his driving record ? How long had he been awake before the accident? Had he been drinking? Is he an American citizen? What are the possibilities that he was working for terrorists? Why didn't the AP reporter answer these questions in the first place!

They are saying that taking alternate routes will be a nightmare because of increased traffic on those already jammed bridges

Stupid Tank Truck Driver! How one person's stupidity will hurt the lives of literally hundreds of thousands. Dads and Moms will take longer to commute to work, leaving less time and energy for kids and family. The stupidity of it all!

We haven't lived in the Bay Area for 27 years and even we know there really aren't any reasonable alternate routes. Either take BART or plan on a V E R Y long commute around the south end of the bay - I can't imagine what the San Mateo bridge will be like Monday morning!
