Launching a newspaper in an industry that has "disconnected" from its readers and advertisers can be successful if the news is free, local and fast, Examiner publisher and chief executive officer Michael Phelps said in a nationally televised interview this weekend on C-SPAN.

Phelps, who is publisher of The Baltimore Examiner and The Washington Examiner, said the newspaper group, which includes the San Francisco Examiner, plans to launch even more newspapers across the nation, despite falling readership in paid circulation "legacy" newspapers.

The Washington Examiner and The Baltimore Examiner newspapers are owned and operated by Clarity Media Group, which also operates the Web site Examiner.com
