Bethesda (Map, News) - Bethesda-based Lockheed Martin this week secured nearly $440 million in federal defense contracts.

Late Monday, the contracting giant received a contract from the U.S. Army valued at up to $380 million to provide support for components of the Apache helicopter.

Lockheed signed on to provide help with the aircraft’s night-vision targeting system.

“The mobility, deployability and sustainability essential to 21st century fighting forces cannot be achieved without a revolution in military logistics,” Lockheed’s Apache Fire Control Director Bob Gunning said in a statement.

“Among the key elements required to achieve this revolution are assured communications, improved automation and information management systems, and of course, a seamless logistics system [Lockeed] can provide,” the statement continued.

The contract lasts through 2010. Lockheed said it would receive $123 million in the first year of the agreement.

On Tuesday, the Army announced it had awarded the company a $58.3 million contract to continue maintaining and supporting the HELLFIRE II missile system.

The one-year contract has options for a three-year renewal.

Under the terms of the deal, Lockheed will operate the HELLFIRE missile depot in Alabama, as well as provide support to missile installations around the world.

Examiner Reader said:
HR 1873 does not require immediate recertification of companies registered as a small business. This goes directly against the spirit of the Small Business Act of 1953. HR 1873 has absolutely no provisions of any kind that would stop Hundred's of Fortune 1000 firms and international firms that have received federal small business contracts from continuing to receive billions in federal small business contracts until 2012.
