Sykesville (Map, News) - Lightning struck the pump station off Sussex Court in Sykesville late Saturday, causing all pumps and the alarm system to fail. On Monday morning, raw sewage was found flowing from a nearby manhole into a swampy area, according to a news release from the Carroll County Bureau of Utilities.

About 95,000 gallons were determined to be missing. Authorities said the area has been cleaned and treated with lime, and both the state Department of the Environment and the county Health Department were notified. Neither agency recommended any further action, a news release said.

For more information, call the Bureau of Utilities at 410-386-2164.

I was told from a point pleasent home owner the spill was the result of a power outage and the lack of back up power genarators, not from grease? is this true? are there back up power units ready to pump sewage if the power fails?
