A Waldorf radiologist filed criminal charges against a security guard at University of Maryland Medical Center who allegedly manhandled and humiliated him before his scheduled surgery.

The charges follow a $30 million lawsuit Dr. Mohammed Hussain filed against the hospital in April, alleging he was forcibly removed from the hospital after a guard found him in the lobby bathroom performing an Islamic purification ritual.

Hussain, 61, was washing his hands and feet in a hospital restroom March 22, when a security guard, Rodney Corban, barged in and started screaming at him, according to charging documents.

Corban then dragged Hussain out of the bathroom and pushed him down the lobby hallway, yelling racial epithets.

Hussain, who was awaiting oral surgery, tried to tell Corban that he was a patient but was ordered to leave the hospital, according to charging documents.

“[Corban] placed me in great fear of being harmed by both accosting me and by his verbal insults,” Hussain wrote in his complaint, which was filed in Baltimore City District Court Thursday.

Corban was charged with second-degree assault and issued a summons Thursday, court officials said. He is due in District Court on June 26.

A hospital spokeswoman said the hospital “believes it would be inappropriate to comment on charges that may or may not have been filed against an employee.”

Corban could not be reached for comment.

Hussain, who is Indian-American, will press on with the civil lawsuit, said his attorney, David Ellin.

“This has no impact on the civil case. They’re two completely separate entities,” Ellin said. “The doctor just feels he was criminally assaulted, as well.”

The lawsuit is meant to prod the hospital into better educating its employees on how to deal with patients of different religious, cultural and ethnic backgrounds, Ellin said.
