To help prevent Lyme disease, which is spread through the bite of an infected tick, Howard County Health Department officials recommend:
» Avoiding tick-infested areas and staying on the center of trails when hiking;
» Using insect repellent containing 20 percent to 30 percent DEET for adults and 10 percent for children;

» Wearing long pants and long sleeves in light colors;
» Checking for ticks after being outdoors.
Lyme disease can cause symptoms such as fever, headaches, fatigue and a bull’s-eye rash.
