Jamestown (Map, News) - African-American and American Indian demonstrators protested the 400-year commemoration of Jamestown, saying the celebration whitewashes the brutality of a large Virginia slaveport and the genocide of millions of Native Americans.

About 60 militantly dressed members of the New Black Panthers and six members of the American Indian Movement stood in a pen, shouting “Shame on Jamestown,” as school bus loads of tourists drove by. The group was surrounded by about 20 police officers and 50 heavily armed reinforcements hidden around the corner.

AIM spokesman Wabun-inini Nindiz-nikaz said the corralling of the protesters was reminiscent of “the 400-year holocaust that renders the Nazi Holocaust pale by comparison.”

He criticized Indians participating in the celebration, calling them “Uncle Tom-Toms.”

Organizer Malik Shabazz, president of Black Lawyers for Justice, said “The founding and the celebration that is going on here at Jamestown — you should be ashamed of yourselves. We find no reason here to celebrate the genocide of the Indians.”

where were the Native Americans? How can you have a true representation without the tribes being present? not actors .. the real thing.. what a bunch of materialism.. all for show and money.. This should have been for reconciliation with the tribes.. This could have resulted in healing for our country.. The Queen of England has already met the Chief of the Chickhominy tribe , and other Chiefs as well.in England!. and has already moved to reconcile with them and yet our own country doesn't even federally recongize the same chief.. ?something is very wrong..At the Vitals pow wow, people from England were there and saying Chief Atkins is our Chief now.... Did you know that you can see pictures in the Native American museum in D.C. of chiefs and and yet our federal goverment doesn't recongize them ? America wake up! the wrongs that were done 400 years ago to the Native Americans must be healed , If we don't heal them.. England will ! and has already started! Debbie Wade
